Good. Solid, reliable punt returner...not a great CB, but can fill-in, in a pinch. At least now we won't have to go into training camp again wondering if he's going to make the team again (I realize a contract is no guarantee in the NFL); just sayin'...I approve this message

One less thing to debate. Slowly but surely these moves will be the doom of the internet message boards.
a one year deal says to me that Rick wants security at the return position heading into the draft, but he doesnt want to be locked into the player if the draft drops a younger/cheaper return guy, with more position specific upside into his lap. I dont think this is any kind of assurance that MS will be on the roster this year, and I dont think he is alone in that pool. We are seeing more and more of the vets having to take cuts and weaker shorter term deals to stick with the team. I think all the love for Brez and the new free agents is coming at the expense of the teams proven vets. right of wrong, popular with the fans or not, we need to be ready to see some different faces at the expense of those we have enjoyed watching. ( me personally, I dont like seeing the team throw away guys that have carried the team through the dark years when they are on the cusp of achieving greatness. seems to me there should be some loyalty and reward to these guys.)

I know its not a popular view, but I cheer for the names on the back as much as the names on the front... they are the team, not some owner in a booth, not some suit in an office, not some logo on a helmet. its the guys that strap on the pads that make our team what it is. just as much as I am relieved when the team moves on from a guy that I think is a poor representative of our team, I am irritated when the suits screw over guys that have done so much for the team. sure they have likely made more money than I ever will, but money isnt the point. its about treating players like humans and not some rental car that you bought the extra insurance on. I admit, I get somewhat of an emotional attachment to the players.

I am with you. Of all the sports, the NFL players, earn their money. They are modern day gladiators for our entertainment and they have a decreased quality of life and life expectancy. So when it comes to NFL players I am usually always on the players side. Not so in silly basketball and baseball - just my opinion. Of course NHL is my second favorite sport.

Especially guys we drafted and have spent their career busting their ass for our team. Sherels, BRob, Greenway, Teddy (limited time, but the feeling was still there), Griff, Harrison, AT, Diggs, Rhodes. The older guys have definitely taken their lumps in the Frazier years. Some like BRob have stayed loyal for less money and it doesn't sit well when they treat someone like him poorly.
No doubt there are cases of NFL teams, including the Vikings, mistreating players about their salaries. But another thing to consider is that players often ask for, and receive, deals which are back-loaded to include high - but not guaranteed - salaries in the later years. Those may be desired for a couple of reasons, including ego ("This makes my contract look really big and will gain some fame for me when it is reported as such") or wishful thinking ("4 years from now I will be getting $6 Million").
But if those end-of-contract salaries are not guaranteed, they are just OPTIONS that the team may choose to elect at their discretion. And...that is not a secret kept from the player or their agent. It's a very common and widely-known practice in the NFL. These guys have a "union" that negotiated a deal that allows this kind of contract, and each individual player accepts them.
We - and NFL players - should all think of any money in a contract which is not guaranteed as being functionally the same as a 5th-year option for a first round draft pick. Did anyone scream about the team being run by snakes in suits when they didn't pay Christian Ponder his 5th-year option?
Restructuring is often the plan from the day a contract is signed, and these players know it. They negotiate these deals when they are in the prime of their careers, but some believe they will be young and strong forever, and some think the money will keep coming for many years. Then they come to the ending years, and they want to act like every penny of their big deal was guaranteed. But it wasn't. I'll save my anger until NFL teams start refusing to pay the guaranteed salaries.
Hopefully not much is guaranteed because he is not a very good corner at all.
He is going to turn 31 at the end of September too. So he is done as far as getting better as a corner.
While he is a good returner he is far from great. He is no Tyreek Hill.
I don't understand wasting a roster spot on a player that is unable to be relied upon to play their position.
If he was a Devin Hester type then I could see using a spot just for a returner.
You have to be exceptional to only be a returner IMO.
But heh, they will likely bring back Newman too. Then not draft any corners and hope that the current group will magically get better next year and not get their arses handed to them again vs the Eagles.
Marcus Sherels adds nothing to the corner back group. Nothing.
Darius Phillips is an interesting prospect as is Mike Hughes. Both have upside as corners and can return punts.
It is not use though.
Any player from Minnesota and who has played ball in Minnesota is above reproach.
The bias is clear.
Hopefully, not too much is guaranteed if they decide to cut him.

obviously you are new here.
Sherels has hardly been above reproach. But if he is so awful, why has he stuck in the NFL for this many years?

Don't know why? Spielman loves him apparently. Why were there no other teams beating down his door to sign him the last two years?
Only one team was stupid enough to give him 2 mil last year.
Hopefully they did not do the same amount this year.
I am not mad at him personally for making all that he can. More props to him.
He is just not good enough to be only a returner.
But Sherels also is an elite coverage guy on kickoffs — as an outside safety — and on punt returns as one of the gunners... :o :o

Cuz Spielman values his mancrushes over winning...

I actually agree with you. He is overpriced as a returner, an aging returner. When he comes in at CB, he is immediately targeted and he struggles. He ALWAYS looks good in pre-season when he is playing against rookie FAs.On his last contract expiration, he tried FA and got nothing, so he re-signed with the Vikings. Every team in the NFL has their special team darling, and every team's fans think that this person is so valuable that they can't let him go because 31 other teams would snap him up in no time. Not true. Sherels is proof of that.
Just because a player doesn't leave is no indicator that they don't have other interest or offers...in some cases better offers. Pretty naive to think that a player from minny wouldn't want to stick around for what should be an exciting year or two.

You think other teams wanted a dude who turns 31 in Sept to only return punts for them?
I prefer they get someone like a Trent Taylor who did just as well as Sherels returning punts AND caught 43 passes for 430 yards with 2 TDs.
That dude did the job of Sherels AND Treadwell AND Floyd last year except for special team coverage which is not that difficult to replace.
That is the kind of player I would like to see in the position of punt returner.

As I said, every team has a ST guy that fans think are irreplaceable, but they aren't. Name me one team that would pay Sherels 2M to be a PUNT returner (actually that was loaded question, there were none), not kick returner, he does punts. Yeah, he is on the coverage unit, but every team has a designated gunner.
