Should AJ McCarron be among Vikings’ options if Cousins lands elsewhere?
If you have a right hand with five fingers on it and you’ve thrown a football before, there’s a good chance that someone has mentioned you as being in the mix for becoming the next Minnesota Vikings quarterback.
So when NFL Network included the Vikings in the conversation when AJ McCarron won his grievance with the league and officially became an unrestricted free agent, it was fair to look past him as a potential option.
But as we come closer to the end of the Kirk Cousins saga, there’s only one thing left that we haven’t looked at closely: The options beyond Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford and Case Keenum if Cousins chooses the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals or New York Jets.
At the Combine, Mike Zimmer laid out the concerns for all three of his viable starting QBs. Bridgewater and Bradford have worrisome knee histories and Keenum might have been a one-year wonder.
McCarron’s name has been bandied about since a brief stint as a starter with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015 in which he filled in for an injured Andy Dalton.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
Shooting for Cousins and ending up with AJ McCarron might not go over all that well.
Especially if we had a bad season, next year.

They should go with Teddy before McCarron. Then draft someone.

Even though we already have a young QB that the team is high on (Sloter)?
How is McCarron an upgrade over any of the ones we already have on our roster?
Not seeing the forest for the trees on this one.

What if Cousins goes with Jets, Case with Denver? Are they really going to turn the team over to Bridgewater (with his 5 plays in 2 years) or Bradford and whatever his degenerative condition is?
You can't count on either anymore. I dont think we can rule out anybody if the football gods and qb's smite the Vikings this offseason.
I agree that Teddy on a one year contract makes more sense over McCarron. Teddy can ball and wins games - just the question of the leg.
If we get to the point of trying to sign McCarron, then things have gone horribly wrong.

Bridgewater and/or Bradford are our best options. Ideally, we'd be smart to have a QB competition in camp and sign both for cheap. They're coming off injuries, so they're affordable and both (more Bradford) are good. Bradford, if healthy, is good enough to win MVP. I truly believe that.
I'm off the Cousins train because of the money. I'd never entertain the McCarron idea.
For the same reasons that Cousins would think that Minnesota is a great destination, so would Teddy, Keenum, Sam, etc. Their pride of being a 'Plan B' is more fan-think than actuality. Minnesota won't get skunked on all 3 if it comes to that. No way.

Two knees that are healthy.
@"Norse" said:Right, that's the bad part. IMO, Vikes have set themselves up for a 'Cousins or Bust' scenario. Is that the right way to go? Not sure. But Teddy must have some lingering issues because the team is supposedly not putting any scenario together where Teddy is the presumptive starter. Maybe Bradford can come to Eagan long enough to sign a new contract from his skiing trip, then twist his knee getting back in his limo to the airport. That would be SO Vikings.@"StickyBun" said: For the same reasons that Cousins would think that Minnesota is a great destination, so would Teddy, Keenum, Sam, etc. Their pride of being a 'Plan B' is more fan-think than actuality. The only QB on the roster has never thrown a pass in a regular season game.
