We watched the movie last evening. Amazing how FDR left Britain to rot, at the time.
I read 'The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill' about 2 years ago and it was fascinating. Britain was incredibly brave and steadfast in their opposition of Hitler and the U.S. really just left them hanging until Japan brought us into the war. Churchill is an amazing individual.
p.s. I love Gary Oldman, straight up.

William Manchester is just brilliant. All his works are fantastic.
I use his narrative of American History "The Glory and the Dream" basically as my textbook.

And his Kennedy book Death of a President is a MUST read for anyone interested in the Kennedy assassination. Portrait of a President, One Brief shining moment...and his book American Caesar on MacArthur. All fantastic.

I do know that Isolationalist policies and sentiment were quite strong in the US following WW1. Even if Franklin wanted to, I think politically his hands were tied till all hell broke lose in 41.
It was "Europe's Business" not for us to get involved. You probably know all that already MT, so I'm not getting professorial here.
My how history would have been different if the Brits couldn't have held out to the degree they did. Hitler not fighting a 2 front war might have meant the demise of the Soviets as well.

Haven't seen the Darkest Hour yet, but I can't wait. For WWII buffs like me, if you haven't seen it before, I encourage you to watch this little presentation. Check out the American death toll in WWII, compared to the British and German deaths. Then get ready to pick your jaw up off the floor when you see the Russian deaths. It is almost unfathomable.
The Russian’s really took it hard. Just a Brutal war for them.
