Panthers Not Expect To Tag Norwell
Andrew Norwell - G - PanthersThe Charlotte Observer's Joe Person doesn't expect the Panthers to use the franchise tag on free agent LG Andrew Norwell.
Carolina has a ton of money tied up in its offensive line with LT Matt Kalil, C Ryan Kalil, and RG Trai Turner. Tagging Norwell would leave the Panthers on the hook for a guaranteed $14.3 million-ish, money they'd likely prefer to use elsewhere. Norwell, 26, is one of the top overall free agents available.
Oh boy, Christmas came early...did not expect that...
can the Vikes afford another free agent OLineman? we are already carrying some pretty good coin in Reiff and Remmers and I suspect that Norvell will command 4-5 years around that 10-11 mark with about 35 guaranteed?
That is a game changer... I think that needs to be your big money FA signing. Not sure if you could still get Cousins with that.
I wanted Richardson but I think LG would make me even more happy.
Norwell is at the top of my list of FAs for the Vikes.

sign Norvell, draft McGlinchey and kick Remmers into RG... hows that look for you?.... hey keep your hand above the table you prevert. :p

That would fix just about anything! That would allow us not to have to take a G at 30 and free up what we are able to do.
Why is this a surprise? There was no way the Panthers were going to tag Norwell and pay their guards a combined $21M. I wouldn't expect the Vikings to have major interest.

@"Canthony" said:They won't pay a guard without tackle versatility $10M+. Guards aren't the type of players you get into bidding wars for.@"Geoff Nichols" said: Why is this a surprise? I wouldn't expect the Vikings to have major interest. That is craziness. Ryan Kalil is in the last year of his deal and has a 9.6 mil cap hit. He has missed 18 games the last two years and said he would retire after 2018. If they cut him they save 6.875 mil.
Matt Kalil can be cut after 2018 and they save 5.7 mil in cap space but take a 7.2 mil dead money cap hit.
Who thinks Matt Kalil will be worth 10.5 mil in cash and a 12.9 mil cap hit in 2019?
They likely will move on from him too.
But maybe they don't care and that is why they drafted Taylor Moton?
It would be nice to see the Vikings go for Norwell but I disagree with the thought of paying a top guard rather than a top QB.
They can get another guard in the draft or a cheaper free agent like Justin Pugh or Jack Mewhort which both come with injury histories.
Who knows? Maybe they try to re-sign Brandon Fusco who bounced back last year?
They only have about 20 mil/yr tied up in their OT's and have outs with both after next year. If they could give Norwell a deal less than Reiff but more than Remmers I could see some sense and have it not really be out of line, nobody else on the OL is making much yet. If they want to sign Sam/Teddy/Kirk you are going to need very good pass pro on the inside. Of course Kirk makes the investment less viable.
Put the best OL in front of the QB you can and the success of whichever one you have will be far more likely. It sure would free up draft capital for a potentialdefensive play maker.

Not tagging Norwell doesn't mean the sides still can't come to a long-term agreement. This is only suggesting the Panthers are not going to pay him $14M on a 1 year deal.
My surprise is that they didn't work something out before hand, especially since Ryan Kalil is talking about hanging it up...

Again, does he even fit the scheme? If he's not coming from a zbs he's not going to seamlessly fit in as many are assuming any more than a CB who is coming from a Cover 2 system.
