This is the positive side of Shurmur becoming HC for the Giants. Top coaches know they can come here and advance their careers. It will be interesting to see what wrinkles he adds to the offense and how hiring him impacts which QB we keep/add. I would have been fine with Stefanski too, but DeFilippo having a little more experience is a nice thing.

Hopefully they retain Stefanski, but my guess is he's New Yawk bound...one step closer to a QB decision/resolution...

Vikings hired Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator. It's a coup for the Vikings, as DeFilippo had reportedly been "leaning toward" staying in Philadelphia after being passed over for the Bears and Cardinals' head-coaching vacancies. On the rise since a well-regarded showing as the Browns' offensive coordinator in 2015, DeFilippo has earned raves for his work with Carson Wentz. DeFilippo is inheriting excellent talent at running back and receiver, but doesn't yet know which quarterback he will be coaching in 2018. It stands to reason DeFilippo will employ some of the play-calling optimization techniques he learned under Doug Pederson in Philly.

For now the Vikings are keeping Stefanski under contract. I don't think they'll do him dirty and block him from a promotion. But I'm sure the Vikings want to get a new QB coach setup before letting him walk away.

I think we sign one of our three QBs to a long term contract within a week.  If we dont then I think we are going for Cousins

Makes sense...We all want whats best for THE TEAM and I believe they'd do right by him if there is a promotion in play.

Vikings hire John DeFilippo as offensive coordinatorThe Vikings crossed off one of the biggest items on their offseason to-do list Thursday.

By Ben Goessling Star TribuneFebruary 8, 2018 — 7:59pm
The Vikings' new offensive coordinator is coming to Minnesota fresh off a Super Bowl parade.
According to a NFL source, the team is hiring Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, who interviewed with Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer in Philadelphia after the Eagles' Super Bowl parade on Thursday.
DeFilippo, who was the Browns' offensive coordinator under Mike Pettine in 2015, was the Eagles' QB coach the last two seasons, where he worked with Carson Wentz during his first two years in the league and helped the North Dakota State product become a MVP candidate in 2017.
The 39-year-old DeFilippo beat out Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski, who was thought to be the team's other leading candidate to replace Pat Shurmur. Stefanski, who has been with the Vikings since 2006, could now follow Shurmur to New York to become the Giants' next offensive coordinator. If the Vikings allow Stefanski to leave, it would mean DeFilippo would likely need to find a quarterbacks coach — the first of several significant decisions he'd need to make at the position.
Case Keenum and Sam Bradford are set to become free agents next month, and Teddy Bridgewater could also hit the open market, if his time on the physically-unable-to-perform list does not prevent his 2017 contract from tolling. Spielman said last week the Vikings' new offensive coordinator would play a major role in the team's upcoming decision at the quarterback position.
"He'll be heavily involved in that," Spielman said. "But the way that we structure everything is that everyone has a part of that process in the decision, and myself, coach Zimmer, our scouting department and all of our coaches. Anytime we're making major decisions, we have a systematic approach that I feel is very thorough to get through so that you can make the best decisions possible and this will be no different, whoever comes in."
Like Zimmer and Spielman, the 39-year-old DeFilippo grew up as the son of a coach, born in Youngstown, Ohio while his father Gene was the offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University. Gene DeFilippo later worked at Vanderbilt and Kentucky before becoming the athletic director at Villanova in 1993. DeFilippo, like Stefanski, went to high school in the Philadelphia area, before playing quarterback at James Madison.
His first NFL job came in 2005 as an offensive quality control assistant for the Giants. DeFilippo's first quarterbacks coach job came in 2007, when he started two years with the Oakland Raiders during Jamarcus Russell's tumultuous time with the team.
Mark Sanchez became the next high draft pick DeFilippo coached as a rookie, with a 2009 Jets team that went to the AFC Championship Game, and he returned to the Raiders for three seasons from 2012-14, spending a year with Derek Carr before going to Cleveland with Johnny Manziel. His work with Wentz in Philadelphia, as part of an Eagles offense that finished third in the NFL in points in 2017, likely raised his stock enough for him to land another coordinator job with the Vikings.

Like the hire, just hope we can keep him for more than one year after we have the #1 offense and win the Super Bowl next year - he'll be in line for a HC position!  B)

Zim is already 62, who knows how much longer he will coach? Maybe they will have his replacement in house now.

First of all: did he sign the contract yet?  I wouldn't want a repeat of the Colt's mistake...  :p

Second of all: what are the chances he can pry Foles away from the Eagles?

Ha! Truth on both points...

I heard Eagles are intent on keeping Fowles unless someone offers them one hell of a deal. That gives them the luxury of not rushing Wentz back early next season.

Foles?  Oh, I think he'd rather bring the ND boy back home.  Carson grew up a HUGE Viking fan.  B)

Yes, how much do we have to give up to make that happen????

I said in 2016 I would have traded Teddy and picks for him if it could have happened.

This makes the eventual QB discussion interesting.  He's seen Bradford.  He knows the opinion of Keenum from an opponents standpoint.

I'm sure he has an opinion.

Plus... he's been watching the Eagles D up close and personal for quite some time.  If it comes down to a rematch, we'll have some inside info.  With Wentz coming back for them, it's a real possibility.

This is going to be an excellent offseason.

I wonder...I just wonder...if this is the guy, who is supposed to be a QB whisperer.  You get Keenum, 4 maybe 5 years (option?), and then you draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd like Litton or Kurt Benkhert.  Prototype size guys who probably needed at least another year or two in college.  Let them sit behind Keenum while the QB whisperer works them up.  Then bam you have your franchise QB once the clock runs out on Keenum...Just a thought...
