I hope Shurmur is training somebody ....
to take over the play calling next year. Every other team around the league is watching what is going on with the Vikings. No Bradford, no Dalvin Cook, and we are 7-2 with a top 10 offense led by perennial backup QB Keenum. Yesterday Shurmur calls for TDs for David Morgan and Jarius Wright.
This has the look of Brian Billick and Mike Tomlin. We did not get to keep those coordinators for very long. We may be looking at the same thing with Shurmur.
I said this last week, and I'm betting he takes Keenum with him unless there is already an established vet QB, but those teams usually don't struggle enough to make coaching changes.
Or... Shurmur says to himself "Self, winning Super Bowl LII was kinda fun... Maybe we stick around and rattle off 2, 3, 4 Super Bowl victories...".
Ok, you're right, that probably won't be thought running through his head as he fields the head coaching offers likely to come his way.
I know I should be slapped for speculating, but I could see the Bears snatching him away from us. It'd be an attractive destination for Shurmur too, if he feels like he could turn Trubisky into the next Sam Bradford sans the injuries. Plus they have an improving defense and a good running game with Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen.
The thing with Shurmur... he's already 52 years old and had two prior shots as a HC. He failed with the Browns (I know... can't blame him for that) and was the Eagles interim HC in 2015 before being passed over for the job by Doug Pederson. He's done an excellent job with the offense this season, but I have my doubts that he'll be the next "hot" HC candidate.

There's to many "Hot" candidates that will get the HC jobs, he may get an interview. But I dont see him getting another HC job this go around.
+ 3.
Shurmur has been HC already...
If anything promote him to some big title and keep him here to backfill Zim one day. Mike was an older hire, isn't getting any younger and the HC gig is a killer. Dog years.
That assumes he likes the area, ownership etc. Hell, it may not get much better than Minny with the Wilfs ownership, facilities, stadium, quality of life here. Up and leave during the cold winters...
I dont think there is an owner out there that will hold the Browns opportunity over Shurmurs head. As far as Philly... maybe... maybe not, but I wouldnt be surprised at all to see him get some serious looks if the offense continues to impress.
He will likely get HC consideration. I think you would have to give him a title like co-HC to deny him an interview opportunity. Maybe he decides that running an offense is better than having responsibility for the entire team. And with Zimmer, a defensive guy, as the head coach, and the credibility he is gaining with every game, I doubt many OCs will have more autonomy than Shurmur. But we need to be prepared in case we lose him.
Why would it matter that Shurmur already had a HC shot? A lot of the top coaches in the NFL - Belichick, Carroll, Caldwell, others - were losers in their first head coaching jobs, went away, and came back smarter and much more ready to succeed. That was one of my key concerns about Zimmer: we had to live through rookie coach mistakes. It looks like he has figured out a lot of his weaknesses, but some coaches seem to need a failure (and firing) to season them.
There is still a lot of season left, but smart owners are going to notice him, especially if he continues to succeed with Keenum and Murray instead of Bradford and Cook. I don't know if he will be a "hot candidate" but "hot" guys are not necessarily the best.

remember when Chilly was the hot candidate?

I sure don't want the guy to go AT ALL, but I'd think depending on what came his way he'd want to be a HC again. I do think the Bears are a possibility. They are very familiar with us and Fox is not getting it done. They have a team that just needs the right leadership.

now I could see the bears being a job to pass on unless you like trubisky. i doubt ownership is ready to move on from him already and by taking that job you would likely be handcuffing yourself to their QB and not being able to bring in your own.

I really overestimated Fox's ability due to Denver's relative success, and it worried me when the Bears hired him. He's not going to last, ownership has not been behind him since last spring when they moved up to get Trubisky. I don't want to see Shurmur there either.

Agree Jimmy, it would be dependent on his feelings about Trubisky definitely. But there are some good things that are in place in Chicago. I'm definitely not saying it will happen ( and definitely PRAY we get to keep our coaching staff intact for another season), but I guess I'm just saying I wouldn't be totally shocked.
The Bears organization is in a mess. Ownership is cheap, old, stubborn, and not exactly forward thinking. The GM is skating on thin ice, and have a lot of holes to fill on that roster. Of course that can probably be said for any team looking to replace their HC. lol.
But it really seems like the chic thing to do these days is hire the up and coming coach like the Rams, 49ers, Dolphins, etc. Pretty sure that model really started with Tomlin. Gone are the days of hiring retreads (not that Shurmur is), but it sure looks like the NFL wants to get younger at the management position.
This is the first time in a long time I haven't wanted to strangle the OC. Creativity, balance, rhythm...we've got to do what it takes to either keep Shurmur or keep his offense.
If I were Ziggy, I'd pay him a substantial amount of money for the next couple years to not leave for a HC job. It might be overpaying, but I think it'd be worth it.
