PFF recognizes Blake Brandel

The Pro Football Focus grading system has taken its lumps in recent years, and especially this one, but it's still a widely used analytics website, so we're noting the love they gave to a Viking this week.

Center Blake Brandel made PFF's Team of the Week for his performance against the Lions.

Brandel earned a 76.8 offensive grade, which tied for the third highest single-game grade in his career. He also received a solid 72.8 pass-blocking grade, allowing zero pressures on 33 reps, and a robust 77.3 run-blocking grade. His marks were an improvement from Week 7 (51.7; 39.8; 61.1).

“I don’t get the sense it’s really bad, but he’s a mobile QB. If he can’t move like he needs to, then I don't know that he’s gonna play.”

Presuming Murray is healthy enough to start this week, I would use the hamstring as an excuse to give Wentz some reps this week. I would start Murray and give him one quarter to a half, depending on how he is doing, then put in Wentz before the game gets out of hand if Murray continues to struggle.

If Murray is truly dinged up, I would give Wentz all the reps.

“A lot gets made into like we have some kind of super hard offense or something. I mean, this is NFL football.

”There's complexity to some of the things that we do, but I also I don't think there's a whole lot of offenses that are just lining up two by two, three by one, and just calling plays. You’re trying to give your guys whatever your system is. You're not moving people for no reason. You're not motioning for no reason.

“Everything you're doing is trying to give your guys some sort of slight advantage, slight edge in order for them to win. Whether that's angles in the run game, whether that's releases, that sort of thing. When you lose a game, you say, ‘Alright, maybe the execution is not what we wanted in all phases, in all areas.’

“And you kind of look and you say, ‘Alright, do we have a bunch of mental errors? Are we busting a lot of things?’ And if that's the case, then that is an argument to simplify, tighten the menu. Make sure, hey, maybe we put too much on these guys going into a game plan. But when that's not the case, it's more about execution and all 11 being on the same page and executing as one.”
