The result of todayâs game likely wonât change my opinion that the Vikings should be highly aggressive at the deadline:

A loss would prove the need for more firepower.
A win would prove this team can seriously contend and the time to invest is NOW.

The Minnesota Vikings walk into Ford Field today as the last undefeated team in the NFL. At 6-0, theyâve done it the unglamorous way. A defense that has surrendered just 12.3 points per game, special teams that keep opponents in bad field position, and an offense that has mostly done just enough. Both teams come into this pretty healthy. Detroit sits at 4-2 with the leagueâs second-highest scoring offense, and this NFC North matchup is the first real stress test of Minnesotaâs perfect start.
The path to staying undefeated is straightforward even if it wonât be easy. Three things stand out to me for today as a path towards victory. Here are the keys to the game.
Vikings 1st Key: Slow Detroit
First, the defense has to make Jared Goff settle for field goals. Goff has been surgical through six gamesâ14 touchdowns and zero interceptionsâand the Lions average over 30 points a game. Brian Floresâ group has lived on pressure and confusion so far, ranking first in points allowed while generating takeaways. That pressure has to show up early and often inside the 30. If Detroit is forced to kick from the red zone instead of punching it in, the math favors Minnesota. The Vikings have allowed only seven touchdowns all season; keeping that number from climbing is the foundation.
Key #2: Corral Jahmyr Gibbs
Second, Jahmyr Gibbs cannot be allowed to create explosive plays on the ground or through the screen game, especially when Minnesota sends extra rushers. Gibbs has been the engine of Detroitâs offense, ranking near the top of the league in rushing yards and touchdowns. Floresâ defense blitzes more than almost anyone, which creates lanes for quick screens and outside zone runs if the edges donât hold up. Containing Gibbs means the back seven has to rally and the defensive line has to set a hard edge without overrunning the play. Big plays from Gibbs off the blitz have beaten good defenses before; they canât be the difference today.
Key #3: Offensive Success With Murray
Third, Kyler Murray and Kevin OâConnell have to get the offense moving the chains. This offense is going to need to score 24+ points to likely get a win today. Minnesota has won games by scoring 16, 15, and 9 points. That wonât be enough against a Lions team that can put up 30.7 points per game on average. Murray has shown flashes of the dual-threat ability that made him a high draft pick, and Justin Jefferson is still Jefferson, but the offense has stalled in the red zone and struggled to sustain drives. OâConnellâs scheme needs to lean into Murrayâs mobility, get Aaron Jones involved early, and find easy completions that keep the defense honest. Scoring 24 or more would flip the usual script and give the defense room to work.
Ugly Wonât Win Today
The Vikings have already proven they can grind out ugly wins. Detroit will test whether that formula still holds when the opponent can score in bunches. If Minnesota can execute these (3) keys to the game they should have a shot of coming out 7-0. If any one of them isnât happening today, the Lions are built to make Minnesota pay. Slow down Detroit, and have success on offense with red zone effectiveness, and Minnesota will prove a lot of people wrong today.
