Well, that was surprising. The GM was also let go.
As a reminder, the Falcons interviewed the following (who later became head coaches) before opting for Raheem Morris:

  • Macdonald (Seattle)
  • Vrabel (Patriots)
  • Harbaugh (Chargers)
  • Ben Johnson (Bears)

The GM (Fontenot) really whiffed. Add that to drafting a 24 year old Penix with an injury history after signing Cousins in a huge deal was pretty crazy.

Question for the football minds: If BFlo moves on is Raheem Morris an option?

Some guys just aren't cut out to be HCs.  I really liked Raheem Morris when he coached at my alma matter, KSU and was excited for him to get into the NFL.  I hated seeing him leave because he was a great defensive coach.  I'd be happy to see him come to MN to replace Flo, if he leaves, but I just don't see how he got the ATL HC job.

Imagine missing out on all of those coaches that Atlanta interviewed and the successes they have right now.  I was never a Penix fan, but the debacle with bringing in Kirk with that contract and then drafting Penix 8th overall is still baffling to me.  Raheem, like Stef were set up to fail with the QB conundrums.

It's become apparent to me in the last 10 years that poor ownership the problem, the coach is used as the scapegoat.

No one develops coaches or rosters anymore.

Ranked from least attractive opening to most:

ATL- Yeah I can't imagine why the GM got fired lol. They've been bad for a long time. I remember their stadium being built around the same time as ours and all the excitement and hope around the Falcons. Been about 10 years since then...

CLE- Browns did Stefanski dirty with the QBs they gave him and the WRs they didn't. Maybe the next guy will be able to figure it out there. Probably not.

ARI- Total mess and will likely stay that way. They need to get Kyler off the books but is there a team desperate enough to take him?

LV- In Owner Marc Davis' statement regarding the new coaching search, he basically handed the reigns of the team over to Brady. Pretty interesting. I do think Brady brings value and has a chance to do what the previous 50 saviors Vegas has brought in hasn't, but I'm surprised the Owner or any NFL Owner would basically take the crown off their own head and set it on someone else's so publicly. But the Raiders have always been odd. Lots of smoke around TB12 hiring old pals Flores and Daboll. Would be smart for them, not so good for us.

TEN- Their newish GM has one draft under his belt and he found some decent talent last year. Maybe he can find a decent coach as well.

NYG- Maybe the crown jewel job opening? To me this feels like the landing spot for Stefanski. It didn't work for Daboll but unlike some other teams on this list, the franchise seems generally competent. Their GM has been a mixed bag but owners are giving him another year which again, shows a stable org.

Sidenote Aaron Glenn surviving as HC in NYJ is hilarious.

The Broncos hired Elway.

The Raiders sold to Brady.

The Dolphins hired Aikman.

And now the Falcons are hiring Matt Ryan.

What ol bag of bones QB can we bring in here to run the team for KAM guys? Daunte? :P

How about we go the John Lynch route instead and go with Harrison Smith?

Eberflus out as DC in Dallas.

Commies also canned Kingsbury and their DC

Wow is that a knee jerk reaction.  QB hurt most of the year, aging RB, defense has fallen apart due to defections and their best defender being on IR most of the season...This would be where B-Flo would go if given the chance.

And a kicker who missed a very makable field goal that would have put the Ravens in the playoffs. Biggest surprise thisfar

NFW!

Dayum...Dumb asz's. They'd be in the playoffs if the kicker does his job.

This is the scenario that could pull BFlo away. S hit.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

1 missed kick didnt prevent them from making the playoffs.  To simplistic of a thought.

The kick was just the icing. Many things went into them missing the playoffs. Jackson not being healthy being a big one. Just didn't play up to what their talent level is really. Guessing Harbaugh just lost the team and the vision on where the team was going. Just my IMO

There's been rumblings of unrest around the Ravens all season and I guess the whispers were right. Seems clear that Baltimore chose to keep Lamar over Harbaugh. He's a great coach, but Lamar's a great QB. Tough call.

Superstars have had the edge in these situations forever so I'm half-kidding here, but the Brady/Belichick breakup and subsequent results probably cost NFL coaches everywhere millions of dollars.

I wouldn't be shocked to find out that Stefanski's availability may have been the impetus for the Ravens move here. We'll know soon!

Not too big of a surprise. Ravens fans are done with him. Too many bad coaching decisions that cost them games over the course of several years. Kind of like the grumblings you here about Tomlin. They know that they’ll probably downgrade at coach in the short term, but they’re ready for something fresh.

Hey, I have an idea. Why not fix the problem and keep them both? Is there not an HR department that can help sort out this little spat? Maybe show one of those little videos with horrible C-level actors portraying Gary from accounting and Gayle from sales resolving their conflict? Guess not. NFL's solution to everything is to fire someone.

ah, that made me chuckle.  "Is there a black purse in here?"  Do you mean that type of c-level video?

Listening to Quadry Ismail this morning made it sound like Harbaugh and ownership have been at a disagreement on how to face this season since last spring,  ownership wanted all in no holds barred,  Harbaugh thinks that approach creates to much pressure and players dont react as well to that pressure than just going out and playing.

Also said the Lamars lack of outward support for JH was more about Lamar just not liking to talk to reporters much.

NFL radio think Flores would be a possible top candidate.

Nfl radio saying Miami fired McDaniels now.  Probably a good spot for Harbaugh.
