Go get Kaepernick NOW!

Have you seen the stat lines on the likes of Newton and Flaco?  Kaepernick has a valid complaint.  He can't be worse then them can he?

Kaepernick is better than all the starters on except Brady and Rodgers.  He is the third  best QB and deserves a hundred million dollar contract and a Bust in Canton.

Last week I started a thread about Kaepernick. For the record, my post was trying to discuss the on-field reasons, pro and con, about him - or others - that might be considered if our QB problems continued. For people who feel dislike (or far worse!) for Kaepernick, the local news is good: Keenum's performance pushed away talk of CK as a Viking.

Nationally, though?? Mr. Trump just gave Kaepernick an enormous boost in visibility and created a few hundred more athletes to create controversy. Just when it was about to fade away, too...

was it really about to fade away?  I dont think so.  everytime a QB gets injured, or has a bad game there was going to kapernick talk,  at least for this year IMO.

The Issue with Kaep is the fact that both sides are against or for him politically not really for football reasons.  I look at Kaep as Josh Freeman 2.0.  He had some great years looked like the real deal but because of defenses figuring him out or being lazy and not really being able to read modern NFL defenses they just fade and go away.  No one is insisting Josh Freeman was this super backup after he faded away were they?  Josh was what he was and the NFL moves on from players at every position for football reasons or cap reasons.  It is cheaper to grab a young guy who has potential to be more than an old vet who may cause trouble in the fanbase thinking he is the savior because the starter stumbles a few games.

Kase Keenam is the perfect backup.  He can come in fill in and keep the team competitive, but no one really thinks he is better than Bradford or Teddy in the long term.  Kaep would split a locker room the moment a Veteran QB stumbles that is just who he is.

I never thought he was that great of a QB personally,  i admit he had some shining moments early,  but I always said he wasnt going to be a typical passer and that has shown to be true.  When the league took the protection off the QBs in the read option it really made Kapernick more vulnerable and his effectiveness declined significantly.   its his game that make me say he is not a starter,  its his social distractions that makes me say he isnt worth the risk as a back up.  its the fact that he is a marginal player that was under  contract and opted out that makes me not give a shit about him and his lack of employment.

Good grief, what happened to Cam Newton? Did everyone figure him out or did he turtle up?

I think you bring up some great points about the nature of being an NFL backup. As you said, teams usually don't want a near-starter as backup, because it can split the fan base / locker room / coaching staff. But when and how does someone transition to that role as a suitable, non-threatening backup? Keenum was considered a possible starter for a while in Houston, and guys like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh and Luke McCown, have straddled the line at times. Matt Schaub, Matt Cassel, Blaine Gabbert, and many more were once "future starters" who became backups. It can happen.

But IMO the NFL's biggest challenge re Kaepernick is that they have a mountain of precedent for "forgiving" problem players, many with issues some people consider much bigger (like Ray Lewis). The biggest of those is Michael Vick. Not only did Vick kill dogs and go to prison, and guarantee controversy for any team who signed him, but early in his career, he was an inaccurate passer who relied on his running and most people thought he could not be a pocket quarterback. So what is the difference between Vick and Kaepernick?

Cam Newton never had a pocket game and neither does Kaepernick.   They are/were run and gun one-offs, destined for short careers when the league figured out how to defend it and the people paying their salaries realized that the highest paid player on a team can't be laying out like a running back on every other play if he's going to stay healthy and lead them to victories.   Neither has a real future in the NFL, imo because you can't really radically alter your game once you're in your mid-late 20's and have played that way for a long time.
