Barreiro KFAN on JJ
I don't see that as being in JJ's character. He is driven to be the best and likely wouldn't sit out. But it is possible. I am with you, they may rest him until after the bye.
@"HappyViking" said:Considering this is JJ's first real NFL injury, it's possible he doesn't want to go out there and re-injure himself, given the lack of guarantees in his rookie contract. But I wouldn't interpret that as being "ticked off." It's the same on the other side of the table. Do the Vikings give him pots of money without seeing him on the field?Yesterday I heard Barreiro talking to ESPN's Kevin Seifert discussing when JJ might start playing again. Barreiro brought up the possibility that JJ might not be healing as quickly as others with his hamstring injuries because he might be using Hock's strategy for getting a new contract. While we don't know for sure if TJ really had the ear infection or not, you have to admit he sure did heal up quickly after his new, shiny contract was in place.Seifert said everyone heals differently from hamstring injuries, and the fact it taking several weeks just might mean JJ's injury is just more severe. However, he didn't rule out the possibility the JJ might be ticked off the Vikings didn't get his new contract done earlier this season.I guess I never really considered JJ might be using this injury as leverage in getting a new deal, but I guess anything is possible. It's all hearsay and speculation, of course, but if JJ isn't playing after the bye week, then I'm really starting to believe the JJ schism is here.
JJ's injury wasn't a tweak or a re-injury to a bothersome hammy. It was a new injury. And those are a 4-6 week thing. More with an abundance of caution. So he hasn't yet missed an unusual amount of time. But I agree that if he's not back after the bye, something's probably up with the contract.
I dont buy that theory for a second. Hammys are a bitch and come in a wide variety of severity, when I tore mine in my 20s, I was in excellent shape and although I didnt have modern treatments and rehab, it took months before I had any explosion again, and with cooler weather coming into factor for a few games, I could easily see it still giving him concerns. Then there is the matter of a contract coming up, imagine how much it would cost him if he were to tear it worse and need surgery or an even longer rehab that could affect his career long term... I dont see any reason for him to rush it, this team is not going to make noise in the playoffs, so why risk his career on a go no where year? He will be back, but not before he's comfortable.
During the broadcast they had mentioned that JJ said that what was keeping him out was not the injury, but his lack of conditioning in that he did not feel he could play an entire game, that was really surprising to me, because if that is really the case then he could have been out on the field with his team. Any number of reps would have made the difference, especially on the last drive. I remember Moss when he was injured still gutting it out on the field to serve as a decoy on some plays. If conditioning is his concern then why not 5-10 plays?
I don’t think JJ would be sitting on purpose. I think he’d much rather be the NFL’s leading
receiver and breaking records than sitting on his butt trying to get slightly
more money than he was going to get anyway.
While I do get that some players get paid a year early, I don’t think it’s
really reasonable to have the expectation that you should get paid a year early
nor is it reasonable for the fans to just be clamoring for him to get paid a
year early. I do
think it’s perfectly fair to not want to play in the preseason and it’s
perfectly fair to choose to sit when you have a potential career affecting
injury especially when there’s life changing money on the line. That said, sitting as a form of protest when
he’s perfectly capable of going, isn’t going to sit well with the team and it’s
not going to help him get what he wants.
The team owns his rights for all of 2024 and can then franchise him for 2025
for less than he’s going to make on his new deal. I think it’s clearly in his best interest to
help the team get some wins once he’s ready and able to contribute.
Barreiro is probably butt hurt ‘cause he has JJ on his fantasy team…! ;) B)

Barreiro likes to stir shit up. I think it's fair and reasonable to be sure he is recovered and he is within the time frame for the injury. It's just a tricky injury and better to err on the side of caution.

Exactly, not like we are talking about the face of our franchise or anything. I hate this part of the media.
It's called filling air time by inventing a story then discussing it with a reporter who's your buddy. Great paying gig if you can get it.

I just hope the Vikings dont F this up, they need to lock him up.
My biggest fear is that the better season Addison has, the more “expendable” JJ becomes in the eyes of Mr. Analytics.
Hunter and Flores need contracts too

the angst on JJ is kind of funny, he is a Viking for 2 more seasons regardless of how he feels on the offer or the QB. ( 5th year and franchise tag )
Hunter is having a beast of a season, he has always been good, but this year is certainly putting him into the realm of play that will get him the kind of money people have been throwing around, however is this him just coming into his own, or is this showing a little extra because its a contract year and once we ink him, does he take his foot off the gas a little? I wonder if his camp would be open to good money with incentives to put him at the top like he is showing currently showing.
Not sure how Flores fits in here as a coach, but yes it would be nice to keep him, however I am pretty sure that will all depend on if he gets HC offers. I think it was pretty widely accepted if he did what he was brought here to do that he would get some interviews and he has mostly held up his end of the bargain.
it would be nice to get our players like JJ, DH, and Darrisaw locked up long term, but really we dont need to make any moves other than Hunter.
