In Vegas again for travel baseball. There's a Viking bar called the Blue Ox on Sahara. A dive bar away from the glitz of the strip sounds super appealing to me right now. Anyone been there?

Probably been to Vegas 30 times and never even heard of the Blue Ox. Let us know how it was.

I heard recently that off strip is getting to be as much of a draw as the strip itself for some,  didn't ask why though.

Its a lot less expensive experience, that's the main reason. The Strip is off the chart busy and expensive.

Give me pretty much any national park any day over places like Vegas or New Orleans,   aside from a Vikings game occasionally,  I really don't tolerate large crowds and the drunken noise all that well anymore.  Yes I am getting old,  but mostly just over all the stupid shit that goes along with those scenes.

My last trip to Vegas with "the buddies" we stayed downtown instead of the strip.

Very different experience, but still a lot of fun...Fremont St @ night is a hoot and feast for the eyes. Almost as much as the MN State Fair.

Vegas has also changed since marijuana became legal recreationally. You smell it everywhere. Some are baked 24/7.

Yes, I believe that's true. 20 years ago Vegas was cheap. The hotels were cheap, the food and drinks were cheap.  Who remembers all the $3.99 Prime Rib signs? Everything was cheap because all they wanted was your money on the casino floor.

Sure different now. $19 for a beer at the Sphere. Burger, sandwich and two beers at the hotel bar: $110. I was in Hawaii recently and that was the most expensive place I've been. Vegas is damn close now.

I used to go about 2 times a year....now in the last 10 years I've gone 4 times. Paid $34 for a glass of Pinot Noir. It just gets stupid. I didn't stop going because its expensive, I quit going because its a freak show. We go to nice places, so we expect the cost. But just recently the restaurants have upped their game, because they used to be very mediocre 10 years ago. Overhyped, especially the Iron Chef owned restaurants. MUCH better now.

At least New Orleans has a soul.

Yeah, but that is one shitty town. I've been to every major city in this country at one point or another and Memphis is my top choice as shittiest (for cities of decent size). New Orleans makes my top 5.

Cities can't be great without a decent amount of shitty. Unless you like Pleasantville. :-)

yep,  if they have to spray the puke, piss, and shit off the streets and sidewalks every morning.... I am good without that scene.

What's funny is that Memphis and New Orleans are two of my favorite cities. I take it you don't like jazz...or delta blues...or river boat queens and Mississippi river history.
All great cities have good and bad. Paris is probably the perfect example. MIght be the dirtiest city I've ever been to. It's also one of the most beautiful. Around Super Bowl time someone went on and on about how awful Philly is. Yes it is.
Also Philly....

By the way, Blue Ox was a bust. Got up early enough to get there before the crowd, but they wouldn't let us in because my son's only 16. Been taking both my kids to sports bars for Viking games since they could crawl. I've never heard of such a thing. And in one of the most permissive cities in the world.

But since they have to put gaming machines in the bar for all the chain-smoking, bad-at-math fucktards who can't spend five minutes away from the chance to WIN BIG, it's 21 and over.
