It's official. What a colossally bad trade up they made for Trey Lance. Horrible. Purdy seems to have saved them, but let's not count those chickens yet.

I agree - terrible trade so far.

Oh well, too bad.

I feel bad for Lance now - that kid needs a chance to get out of the spotlight and curate a while.

Not his fault he was so over-drafted. Reminiscent of Ponder in that regard. But Lance is an even bigger gaffe.

Ponder at least played some big boy games in college and played at Florida State. Lance played few games, threw few passes and played in a way lesser than conference. And nobody moved up and gave up what San Fran did to get Lance for Ponder. I don't see an apples for apples comparison.

My only point being both Ponder and Lance were over-drafted, they then carried the burden that goes with it.

RS panicked and took Christian while the 49'ers thought they were smarter than everyone else and made a whopper of a move.

Its actually one of the worst trades in recent memory: 2 first round picks and a 3rd round pick to move up and he's only been in the NFL 2 seasons. Ugh.

I'd still be interested in kicking the tires on a long-term project, let him ride the pine and steep in a system while regaining his swagger.

That said, I wouldn't give more than a 6th round pick for him...or maybe some of our excess WRs that we'll be releasing soon, anyway....

My thinking as well...

I suspect the 49'ers may keep him at this point. At least one more year. Unless some team is willing to offer more than a 4th or something that has some face saving grace.

I'd send em one of our depth TE's or WR's and a 6th.

why not take that 6th and use it on a flyer with a better pedigree?  If we could get him for a player to be cut,  sure, but lets get off the sending mid to late round picks on flyers please.  if the best QB guru HC says he's done, then what do we think we are going to get out of him?

small town HS,  small time college and almost no resume there at that,  and nothing to show for a pro career.  I feel for the kid,  he can console himself in the 34 million he is guaranteed from his rookie deal.  it sucked that he was over drafted,  but that didnt prevent him from succeeding, what would have really sucked is if he had been a 7th rounder and still sucked and only have about a million to show.

Its crazy how some teams get so enamored by some college quarterback that has one great season against inferior talent.  They think this is the next great quarterback that is going to save our franchise.  Lets draft him no matter what it costs.  Brock Purdy may have saved John Lynch's job.

Pelissario reporting they are now looking to trade him with the Vikings thought to be a destination that makes sense.

If the Vikings don't feel like there's upside with Hall, might as well...

I agree. Bust is a bust. What has he shown to take a flyer on? He lacks accuracy, QB awareness, etc. Let another team give up a 5th rounder for him and then  next year, when he's cut outright, then the hometown crowd will be happy when Minnesota signs him for no comp. I'm fine with that. Can always use a camp arm.

Agreed but it better be a 6th rounder at most and that is kind of pushing it. Also if they do this deal that should 1000% not preclude them from looking very, very hard at QB early in next year’s draft. But as a flyer? Sure. I guess. And I liked Lance coming out too. Surprised he stinks so bad.

just curious, what did you see that suggested that he might make a good pro QB?

he has guarnteed money in 23 and 24 contract years, SF would have to pay a team to take in that contract.

Big arm and great mobility for the position so I thought he could figure it out. But he’s coming off a broken ankle so the latter point could be moot now. If that’s the case then I’d say pass. OTOH he’s still younger than Levis, Love, Hooker, others so maybe there’s a chance he’s not totally done? Idk. Like I said he’d have to come very cheap and the team would have to believe he’s better than Jaren Hall.

Yeah you can.  The kid played at a high level consistently for 3 years in the Big 12.   Will he be a Tom Brady?  Who knows but he is worlds above Lance or Darnold at this time.  He is a LOT more athletic than you think, he ran the RPO at ISU at times and was extremely good running the football.

I'm not sure I'd like the Vikings trading for him at any cost. If Shanahan can't get him up to NFL standards I doubt anyone can. A total bust at this point.

I was listening to NFL Radio and they were discussing Lance and the 49ers offense just being a bad fit for him. Shannahans offense is thought to be "QB friendly" but you really need a guy who can diagnose the defense and get the ball out accurately from the pocket. I don't think Lance really gets to utilize his best traits, which are his athleticism, rolling out of the pocket, etc. He needs reps. Played only a handful of games in college, basically sat as a rookie behind Garopollo, injured for the year game one last season, and has essentially been splitting the reps this offseason. Maybe it's simply a case of him needing to play more and be in an offense more tailored to the things he does well. He is still young and the Vikings should consider kicking those tires

I can see them putting Darnold ahead of Lance for this year,  they are a NFC favorite so you want a veteran back up plan,  but that doesnt explain why they would be moving on from him as the jury is still out on Purdy,  and they could only get better offers if they hung onto him and he did mature a bit,  maybe its a cap space thing,  but even then,  why would anybody take him on if his rookie deal was to much for the team that knows him best?

I am still not seeing an upside of him or the contract.   grab him in FA,  make him part of a package that nets us future picks for Cousins and a player we were going to cut anyway,  but I dont see giving up draft picks for others trash.

I think they are sold on Purdy being "the guy" moving forward. Lynch said he was their starter and had earned it shortly after their season ended. I can't see him doing that if he felt the jury was still out on Purdy or that the injury would hinder him going forward. And it's like I was stating above, Purdy is tailer-made for the Shannahan offense. It's also why Shannahan wanted Mac Jones but was overruled by Lynch. I don't think it was ever a fit that was going to work.

As for the Vikings, we don't have a plan at QB moving forward so this could be an option

I dont see it as a viable one though.  We need to focus on a qbotf,  not trying to make somebody else's cast offs work for us.  You got precision route runners,  you need precision passers to take advantage of that,  I never was impressed with Lance's arm in that regards and honestly,  its nothing special to throw hard or long,  its doing those things accurately that is the key to arm talent.
