Vikings Make $72 Million Pro Bowler Available on Trade Market (msn.com)

“The Vikings have evaluated trade options for Hunter in light of his ongoing unhappiness with his contract, with sources from multiple teams saying Minnesota has made the former Pro Bowler available,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Saturday, July 29. “The Vikings have attempted to extend Hunter, but not on a long-term deal the player feels is commensurate with his skill set, sources said.”

He’s worth a #1 AND a #2–he’s still young but with Hunter so obviously discontented we have lost leverage. It doesn’t seem like this relationship can be salvaged. Sigh. I guessing we will take what we can get now. It’s too bad but I think you are in the ballpark AGR.

What is the advantage the Vikings  gained by waiting til now to make this move ,instead of doing it in April or  close to  the draft?

Minnesota needs a little luck and some misfortune from another team to get max value out of Hunter in a trade: an injury to a premier pass rusher on a top 10 NFL team. Davenport, who Minnesota just signed as a FA this offseason is making twice what Hunter is this year, so I get the angst. If this is truly a 'competitive rebuild' as KAM says, getting a 1st rounder for Hunter has to be the minimum value for comp. I wonder what other teams think of him?

My thoughts exactly. Why not get everyone talking in March so if it doesn't work out, you can trade him before the draft, before teams have 90 hopefuls in camp. And you can maybe draft or sign a replacement for him.

I could see this coming a couple days ago in the interview with KAM about JJ and TJH. He said something about both of those players being in the Vikings' "long-term" plans, which was never said about Hunter. Clearly the Vikings have a vision that precludes players over a certain age.

But I think the Vikings are potentially making a big mistake here. Hunter's only 28. And unless he wanted silly money, the Vikings should've paid him.

I keep thinking of this visually. As if there's a scale with "tear down" on the left, "run it back" on the right, and somewhere in between "competitive rebuild." If the Vikings are willing to trade Hunter, easily their best defensive player, that needles moves decidedly to the left.

How frustrating will it be to watch this offense explode in '23, which could easily happen, only to have the defense thwart any hopes of a championship. Again.

Edit: post rendered irrelevant.  Note to self: read entire topic list before posting.  Will now practice Homer Simpson impression.   D'oh!
