Minimum Return for D. Hunter

Sounds like Wonnum is the one who got Hunter's snaps in OTAs, which is a little surprising to me. I think of PJ2 as the better pass rusher and Wonnum the better run defender.

Hunter is THE key decision of the offseason IMO. The "river" in poker terms. You keep him, the Vikings should be legit contenders. You trade him and they're not. But you might just get the capital you need to draft the QBOTF.

If you trade Hunter at this point, I will have lost a lot of faith in this front office.  

It's either keep Hunter, Kirk and press forward to see what noise you can make.  Or you take both pieces and move on them this offseason and have capital for a rebuild (cap room, draft picks).

I think they should keep him but I understand if people are disappointed in his lack of game in and out presence

A couple of things:

If this really is a rebuild year, you don't trade Cousins before you sign JJ.  And you hope Brock Purdy's recovery is slowed.

On D. Hunter, you really need to determine if best to trade him a year early then sign him and get rid of him a year late.  This regime looks like it leans into getting rid of players a year early then a year late and has spent a lot of time cleaning up the contract situation. 

I have no problem going to a 3-4.  As for all the playoff teams that run a 4-3, going to a 3-4 is counter-programming.  As teams spend most of the year preparing for 4-3 defenses, it makes it harder to prepare for a 3-4.  Of course, it has to be a complex 3-4, not a Donatell vanilla 3-4.

It's going to be a much more competitive division this year. Bucky Brooks over at NFL.com just picked the Packers to win the division with the Vikings coming in 3rd behind the Lions. I just don't see the appeal in mediocrity. If they move Hunter, they should move Cousins as well because retaining him only gets you shallow victories on your way to a 6 or 7 win season. I'd rather sign Carson Wentz to compete with Hall, and let the chips fall where they may. The likely outcome is getting a ton of playing time for our young guys to see if they fit into our long term building, and securing a top 5 draft pick where we might actually have a shot at Caleb Williaks or Drake Maye to lead this franchise into the future. I'm highly skeptical of the "competitive rebuild." It sounds like an idea on par with the "triangle of authority."

I think a competitive rebuild only works if you have certain key positions filled... like franchise QB,  at Kirks age I dont think we can check that box and as such it should be a matter of going all in for that QBOTF,  even if that means moving off Kirk and others before they are all used up.  Odds of finding that QB are slim,  but they are even slimmer and more expensive when you are drafting from the low 20s,  if we are not going to win it all,  and are needing major additions to get to the point,  then lets git to gittin.  lets rip that bandaid off already.   of course this is something that should have been done before now to maximize the return IMO.  I just find it crazy that the niners havent made a real move to improve their situation.
