Cousins has always proven himself. He’s ready to do it again.
https://www.inforum.com/sports/pro/vikings-qb-kirk-cousins-has-always-proven-himself-hes-ready-to-do-it-againST. PAUL -- As an 18-year-old growing up in Michigan, Kirk Cousins
remembers preparing for college without any knowledge of what lies
ahead. He was the starting quarterback for Holland Christian High School
at the time, and despite some moderate interest from some schools, he
still hadn’t received a scholarship offer.
“I’m going into my
senior year with no scholarship offers,” he remembered. “I walked off
the field the last game of my high school career with no scholarship
offers.”
After almost every game, Cousins remembers a local
reporter from the Holland Sentinel asking different variations of the
same question: How was he handling the sea of unknowns?
“If you
win football games, and do your part, and put your work in, the rest
will take care of itself,” Cousins said. “That certainly happened in my
high school career.”
That mindset followed Cousins to his college career, where he
won the job at Michigan State during his sophomore year and never gave
it back. That mindset then followed Cousins to his professional career,
where he was a backup with the franchise now known as the Washington
Commanders before taking over as the starter.
Now it’s helping Cousins navigate his current situation with
the Vikings, where he doesn’t have a contract beyond next season. A
couple of months ago, Cousins agreed to restructure his contract, adding
more void years, which essentially allowed the Vikings to free up some
cap space without signing him to an extension.
“I’m looking
forward to this year and wanting to go out there and prove it again,”
Cousins said. “That’s really where my focus is.”
Though he has become a
polarizing player in Minnesota largely because of his huge contract,
Cousins has also put together some impressive performances that
shouldn’t be overlooked. He has thrown for 20,934 yards and 153
touchdowns across 80 games with the Vikings, most recently leading them
to an NFC North championship last season.
In the past, Cousins has
made it clear he wants to retire with the Vikings. That hasn’t changed
even if they’ve put him in a position where he once again has to prove
himself.
“I want to be in Minnesota,” he said. “That’s kind of a no-brainer, so hopefully we can earn the right to do that.”
As
someone who preaches staying in the moment, Cousins manages to do that
by going back to the lesson he learned when he had no idea where life
was going to take him. If he simply focuses on winning football games,
the rest will take care of itself.
“I’m encouraged and excited
because I do think I have a lot of good football ahead of me,” he said.
“I feel positive about the future looking forward and I go back to how
this has kind of been a part of my story.”

im not attacking the season, i am asking why KC gets all the fn credit and the D gets all the blame for the shortcoming of a season that some think is something to hold up as a baseline for future potential. KC is 35 years old, he has never produced anything close to a SB contender as an NFL QB, but yet some fans want to blame everything including the fly on the wall and the way the parking lot is striped as a reason why the teams he has led, cant elevate to a championship contender.he is a hell of an arm talent, but his lack of mobility is a liability. his age and track record suggest that he is not a horse to which a team should be hitching their wagon. for shit sake Rick.... we have had fans saying not to take a risk on a 25 year old QB ( hooker ), because he is to old, but we have fans saying to re -up with a 35 year old, proven nothing KC? come on man... he is more than able to keep delivering us "nice " seasons, but at our age, is that what we are really about?
At a high level, thats the right interpretation of last season...KC is the driver of the strength of the team, which is offense. Not Darrisaw or Hock or even JJ.
It'll be the strength of the team this year too. Hopefully the D wont suck as badly and we wont be one/done in the post season.
Cousins had a top 10 defense for the first two years here and we had one wild card win out of it. Last year had all of those close games (which we won unlike 21, which we lost) because this team was horrific for a minimum of 1/4 a game, if not half. Cousins is a part of that, he needs to be more consistent in moving the chains. Problem is, he won't be able to as he ages with lesser mobility by the year. So the team needs to get better value per contract which is very hard to do.You need a great team around a guy like him to win deep in the playoffs, with his contract mercenary attitude and cost, we won't ever be able to field a team that can get him over the hump. You are essentially saying he needs
A top 15 OL (which means two guys playing at a high level and getting paid)
the same level of premier WRs he has had his whole tenure here (Diggs, Adam, Jefferson)
a good running game
a good tight end
and a great defense that is cheap (have to hit on 75% of your picks)How the fuck does that happen?
Also how many QBs could go deep with that roster for less?
The franchise loves mediocrity and will continue to be that as long as they ride the Cousins ride. Who here can confidently say this team has what it takes to win 2 playoff games in the same year in the next two years? No one, so why are we running it back? I can guarantee you Cousins will be either 37/38 and finally move on from Minnesota with over $200M made and 1 wild card win to show for it.
Bad investment.
From all indications Cousins was willing to negotiate a contract extension that wasn't going to be out of line. Maybe the Vikings weren't happy with the length or guarantee? It might be negotiable, maybe not. As far as his age and performance drop off. Have you seen any? Is it conjecture that it will happen in this coming 2-3 years? Complete guess. Thing is, he knows how to take shots. Some guys know how to fall and protect themself. I feel better about his longevity than Lamar, Hurts, Tua, even Josh Allen, as big as he is, he takes vicious shots when he is not a true running back, and gets bent backwards. I'd say he's much more prone to be concussed or leg injury. Roethlisberger turned into a side of beef even without all the running. As for Kirk's first 2 years, in 2018 the coord. was DeFilippo, Treadwell was our 3rd WR. Nuff said. In 2019 our defense was ranked 14th. Remember who our Offensive starting guards were? Elf on a shelf and some guy named Josh Kline. We also had Bradbury as a rookie. We had to rely on Bisi Johnson when Thielen went down for 6 1/2 half games.
Your laundry list of what it takes Kirk to win a SB describes what it takes every team to win super bowl, but then ask; How the fuck does that happen? LOL. Then dressing your unicorn in extra special cammo you insist the team win it all with a QB and defense on rookie contracts or on the cheap...LOL... KC is maybe the only franchise to do it in the modern era.

I can't confidently say we're going to win 2 playoff games this year or the next. But I think it's much more likely with Cousins than without him. And if he gets that 3rd year in KOC's offense, I like his chances a lot more. But mostly because that will give Flores a 2nd year to improve a horrible defense, which for those with two functioning eyeballs, was the only reason the Vikings didn't get a 2nd chance in the '22 playoffs. And you mention that our defense was good in 2018. It was solid that year. But don't forget that was the year of the DeFelippo disaster, a coach who is now coaching in the USFL.

Is that the goal, a playoff win? I thought it was to win the playoffs and I dont see this team making the leap to the level of the iggles or niners, hell we will be lucky to win our own division again .

You're just making excuses! Either that or you're able to watch football games, identify what went right and what went wrong, who's to blame and who's not, which is just weird, man.I'd forgotten about our OL in 2018. It was Reiff, Tom Compton, Pat Elflein, Mike Remmers and Rashod Hill. Still, Cousins threw for 4300 yards, 30 TDs and 10 INTs. For comparison's sake, the QB many wanted to replace him, Justin Fields, doesn't have that many yards or that many TDs in TWO seasons combined, but he has over twice that many picks.
I think some of you are forgetting that this year, the rest of the league learned what time it is: its bad bitch o'clock:

But did he sign a team friendly deal? One that allows them to spend cap on building up weaknesses? No. The GM isn't going to go to him with the best offer for Kirk, Kirk is about Kirk and his money. I don't blame him, it's a business but it would be nice to see him get off this deal flow with guarantees if he wants to WIN here. He's tough as nails, I don't disagree there one bit. He's on the backside of his physical career, it only goes in one direction. The question is how fast does it happen. He will probably perform well in a passing focused league but for what, another embarrassment when it matters?2018, defense 4th in yards, 9th in points. Kirk had moments where balled out and then pissed down his leg post thanksgiving with less than 200 yards in 4 out of 5 games. 3 losses there when one win puts the team in the playoffs
2019, the defense was 14th in yards but 5th in points (which is a better metric) you are choosing to leave out here. 82 and 126 passing yards vs your biggest rivals the last two weeks of the season with a healthy Cook, Diggs, Adam. That was a bust.To be a champion, his game needs to be surrounded by a great team. We don't have that and will not this year nor next unless he take a real cap cut. He's lucky to have had the weapons he has had here, pretty much a top 3 WR duo and a top 5 RB every year since 2018.
They're a lot of QBs who could succeed in that position.
To think he's going to be something else than what he has always been. To think that we are going to build a perfect roster with his cap number. It's foolish and not a plan to a win a championship.

im not attacking the season, i am asking why KC gets all the fn credit and the D gets all the blame for the shortcoming of a season that some think is something to hold up as a baseline for future potential.
"BUT LOOK AT THE COMEBACK VS INDY" while neglecting how terrible his offense was for the first half with 9 drives totaling less than 100 yards
But hey having fun regular season banners are fun, I guess.
The trope cracks me up every time is that Kirk needs to be surrounded by with a great team. Show me 1 NFL QB that won deep into the playoffs without a great team.
The assumption is that any QB can be plugged in and do what Kirk does. Ya'll sound like the ghost of Red McCombs. Please name an available vet that can put up Kirk's numbers and would play for 10 million less? Should have just handed the keys to Mannion. If you honestly think KC's cap # is what kept us from a deep playoff run, I got nothing for you.

Yeah, I think Ill take Super Bowl confetti over gimmick celebrations any day.
Yes, because the franchise has won so many of them (eye roll).1 Super Bowl appearance, 0 wins. 155 career victories, never won the big one. So this guy sucks as well?
Yeah, Kirk is definitely a Dan Marino type talent. JFC. Clueless.
...but still using Super Bowl wins to judge QB's value...LOL...
It feels like we just keep rehashing the same things when Kirk's name comes up. We sound like a bunch of broken records.

True. But I'd imagine that fans of teams with elite QBs in their prime probably don't have to spend 6 years arguing at each other's throats over whether the guy is right for the franchise.
To me he's just one of a bunch of mid-tier guys in this league. Good, but not so good/great as to make the team legit SB contenders the way the elite guys can. Let's face it, the last time we were routinely legit contenders was the only time we had a truly elite QB - 50 years ago.
So like many teams we are just on the middling QB carousel where the team sells hope every year because that's kinda all there is. I await the annual late summer announcement from the brothers Wilf that this is our year. Oooh, the anticipation...! =)

Hardly mid-tier, but been on mid-tier teams, with mid-tier staffs. Has had a few top-tier offensive weapons that have been offset by inexplicable horrible coaching and fundamentally flawed/built rosters.
@"purplefaithful" said:@"StickyBun" said: The guy has an amazing attitude. Oozes leadership. Yet half the fanbase dislikes the guy. Its so weird.
Only one way to quiet haters....
Did San Diego fans hate Dan Fouts as much as Vikings fan hate Kirk? How about Warren Moon? How many fans and experts disrespected him as much Kirk gets disrespected?
