Well, looks like it won't be Desai. He just took his name out of the running for our spot and is interviewing with Denver for theirs.

Pettine is the fall back position after everyone else says no, which is starting to look likely if Flores gets the Cardinals job.

Don't think it matters with the talent on D being as bad as it is.

Geoff's sources said no on Pettine. I wonder how the interview with Evero went yesterday with Payton? If he's still interviewing other candidates than we still have a shot at him or Flores. We need that Cardinals job to get filled so we can see what we still have available.

I'm a little surprised by this after all the Fangio back to Denver talk with Payton coming on board. I read that Payton was interviewing Evero today to remain the Broncos DC so it's not looking very good at the moment for him joining the Vikings. Assuming Flores gets the Cardinals job, I would say Desai is the pick by Default. I refuse to consider Pettine as a legitimate candidate.

Short of an absolutely obscene contract Fangio was never going to Denver. He wasn't going to accept a lesser position from a team that shit canned him as head coach barely a year ago.

Evero is number 1 in my book and it isn’t close. He’s one of the few out there who will design a defense to his personnel. This is by far the most important trait I’d look for in a coach.

Why? KISS principle. Trying to match and assemble 25 or so defensive players to your scheme is exponentially more difficult than one guy simply writing/designing a system around the players he has now.
This is why I have zero time for coaches and their “system”. I just watched Mike Zimmer toil with his GM for a long time trying to fit personnel. It’s just stupid.

Evero has been around nearly every scheme out there by many of the most respected coordinators. A guy not married to a scheme is key to me. I want a guy who when he’s asked if he’s a 4-3 guy or 3-4 guy, responds with 3 other alignments and tells me he’s matching the best fit with the players he has. I want the guy who when he sits down to interview can already tell you what fits the guys on your roster who are currently under contract.
That’s what I want in a defensive coordinator. Hopefully the front office sees it the same way.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Vikings placed a formal request on Friday to interview Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who worked with coach Kevin O'Connell for two seasons in Los Angeles.Because Evero remains under contract with Denver, however, new Broncos coach Sean Payton would have to grant permission for him to interview for other jobs. Payton had not done so as of Friday night, though the Broncos plan to interview other candidates for their defensive coordinator job. He has a close relationship with former Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett, who hired him as Denver's defensive coordinator a year ago before O'Connell became the Vikings' head coach. If Evero is permitted to interview for the Vikings' job, he could ultimately be the team's selection.
Steelers assistant head coach Brian Flores also remains high on the Vikings' list, after interviewing in Minnesota on Jan. 26. He was on the Patriots' staff when O'Connell was a quarterback there from 2008-09. Evero and Flores still have chances at head coaching jobs; Evero interviewed twice for the Colts job, while both men have interviewed for the Cardinals' opening.
If neither Evero nor Flores winds up in Minnesota, the Vikings could turn to assistant head coach Mike Pettine, a former NFL head coach and longtime defensive coordinator who interviewed for the job last month and is still in the running.
While the Broncos have not yet permitted Evero to interview with the Vikings, they placed a request with the Steelers to speak to Flores, who had interviewed for Denver's head coaching job in 2019 and named the Broncos as one of the defendants in his 2022 lawsuit alleging racial bias in the NFL's head coaching interview process. Seahawks associate head coach Sean Desai, who is also a candidate in Denver, had interviewed for the Vikings' job, as well.
Whether the Broncos allow Evero to interview with the Vikings or whether they block him, the Vikings' search could pick up speed soon. Their interviews have covered a wide range of defensive approaches, from the man coverage schemes Flores first learned under Bill Belichick to the ideas former Saints co-defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen brought to the table before accepting the Falcons' defensive coordinator job.
