KOC thanks Donatell but ...
Tells him we are going in a different direction. It is done.
Vikings fire defensive coordinator Ed Donatell
The Vikings have fired defensive coordinator Ed Donatell.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell announced the move today, a day after declining to answer whether Donatell would return.
“Today I informed Ed Donatell we will be going in a different direction at defensive coordinator in 2023,” O’Connell said in a statement. “While this was a difficult decision because of the tremendous respect I have for Ed as a person and coach, I believe it is the right move for the future of our football team. I want to thank Ed for his commitment to the vikings this past season, for the positive impact he had on our players and coaches and for his role in helping me as a first-year head coach lay this foundation.”
The 65-year-old Donatell is a longtime NFL defensive coordinator who will surely have offers if he wants to join another coaching staff, but his one year in Minnesota ended up with a disappointing playoff loss and a pink slip.
Thank you KOC!!!!!!! I figured we were going to suffer through another year.
Yes, please bring in someone younger and more innovative
I never rejoice in someone losing their jobs, but _onatell needed to go and for all the reasons that have been articulated here literally since the season opener vs GB.
If he hasn’t already, Ed should take up fishing…! ;) :p
I sure hope that means were back to a 4/3 base.
Well it had to be done but I am sure he will be alright. Now the question is who is going to come in and do this thing right. I am sure it was tough for KOC to actually do it but there was no way he could have been here next year. God I remember those days of firing people, it sucked. KOC learned that the hire was wrong and now it's onwards and upward

Aaaaand I was right again. The guy was an awful pick for defensive coordinator and I said it from day one. Hopefully KOC isn't still so pig headed on trying to make this complete defensive overhaul to a 3-4. Let's get back to 4-3 football with a strong defensive line and an aggressive defensive coordinator. Letting Hunter and Kendricks do what they do best would be a good start.
Sean Desai sticks out—was a DC finalist last year, did a great job in SEA this year & just interviewed for the Browns' DC spot.

Aubrey Pleasant & Anthony Weaver were finalists last year too. Could go the Rams route with Jonathan Cooley or Eric Henderson.https://t.co/rbhDPCk8xW
Desai wouldn't surprise me at all

How does he not realize that's part of the problem?
Sean McVay blocked Jonathan Cooley from an interview on the Minnesota staff last season and then paired him with first-time NFL DBs coach Chris Shula as a part of retaining him in 2021, so his dismissal was a surprise to some people in the building and in the locker room. https://t.co/hGsrDH6gN1

Anthony Weaver from the Ravens anyone?
I think the scheme continuity will be less about 3-4 vs 4-3 and more about comfortability with the Fangio-style coverages on the back end

Leonhard's not a Fangio-tree guy but if they could coax him maybe they don't care. I know LaFleur wanted him last year in GB IIRC

Why are we trying to replicate that? And anybody Green Bay has wanted to run their defense I'd want nothing to do with. Let's not forget Eddie D ran that defense into the ground for 3 seasons as their coordinator. The issue is we are still trying to force a scheme that does not suit the skillsets and strengths of our best players. That's a huge part of the puzzle and I don't get KOC's obsession with continuing to try to force it. It's like the Brad Childress version of the "kick ass offense" where I know it doesn't work, but dadgumit....it looks good on paper. Again, 7 of the remaining 8 teams in the playoffs run a base 4-3 but we are looking for someone to run Fangio style coverages on the back end lol
