Jones, the most NFL-ready of all the 1st round QBs, also had the lowest upside. He went to the ideal team, who gave him a rookie's diet and didn't ask him to do much. It wasn't hard to predict a decline in year two.

NE is another team that will be looking for their QBOTF in 2023 or 2024.

I think so. Jones is one of those guys that needs everything just right. Tough to build a team around him that way. Risky.

I remember one or two posters who were pissed we passed on Mac Jones.  I didn't see a lovefest on here for him.  On the other hand, I was in Love with Wilson who is flopping although he went to the worst situation of all the QB's.

Our Kirk contract situation really prohibited us from using high draft capital on a QB of the future two years ago.  We are locked into to Kirk through next year, so this draft is a perfect time to be proactive and look to the future.  I am no college draft guy but their seems to be a good number of QB's coming out with 3 going top 10 easily.

We should be locked to Kirk. The guy has balled for us for what 5 years now?

I would like a progression plan if a QB we really like is there in late first.  You can still let Kirk play on his contract next year and then you have options at the end of that season.  This year was/is critical for Kirk and no doubt he has played/won up to his contract this year so far.

If the opportunity is there, take a QB. Ideally, you hit on him AND Cousins settles nicely into KOC's offense and continues to play great football. I think he will. I also think, given his durability and playing style, he could be one of those QBs who plays well into his late 30s, early 40s.

How the worm has turned in NE...BB looks tired now too. Wouldnt surprise me if he hung up the whistle sooner than later.

How locked into a guy can you be that is already 35 yrs old and has the pocket awareness of a blind man.  Yes he has been super durable,   but that has a shelf life too and these pounding hes taken are going to be adding up and taking a toll. I dont necessarily agree with MB that he's gonna play for another 5+ years,   i think at any time he could get a concussion or some other injury that scares them, and his wife says that's enough and he just walks away.  He's a cerebral person and imo thats the type that is constantly in a state of self evaluation,   weighing the persoanl risks with the personal rewards.

If Mullens isn't the plan to replace KC in 24 or 25,  then they need to make a hard move to get that guy in house and learning from KC...hopefully just not the shrewd contract negotiations part.

I'm in the camp that KC can play another 4+ years at a high level, especially with this scheme/coach.  The OL should do nothing but get better in the next seasons too.

Use this time to find that QBOTF and lets see if KAM can't do something to get a team friendlier deal during that time too.

Some of the gen-snowflake qbs just aren't built for a grown man's game, Zach Wilson. :p

I was one of those that wanted Mac Jones. Again not to have him start but have him sit for a year or two and take over or give us leverage for Cousins or trade capital later. There was absolutely no downside to drafting Mac Jones. I still think it was a missed opportunity especially after the Mond pick. We could have had Darrisaw and Jones both.

To those that use BB statement as vindication, at least Jones is still playing with two years under his belt as a starter. A tepid vote of confidence from BB is better than being cut or wasting threee of four top picks.

As a reminder the Vikings traded down with the Jets to get Darrisaw. We received the 66th and 68th pick.
The 66th pick was used on Mond who is long gone (pretty much a wasted pick. We could have had Mac Jones as QB2 with two years learning and also saved money). I am assuming the 68th was further gambled with

  • Round 1, Pick 23: LT Christian Darrisaw
  • Round 3, Pick 66: QB Kellen Mond (CUT)
  • Round 3, Pick 78: LB Chazz Surratt (CUT)
  • Round 3, Pick 86: G Wyatt Davis (CUT)

At the bold: This is why I wanted Mac Jones. We could have evaluated him and groomed hom without the pressure. If he did not develop or we prefered Cousins we also could have traded him. We wasted a pick on a raw QB who needed a lot of work and was clearly a long term project.

Thats the same scenario we had two years ago.
Jones would have been in year three with the Vikings and two years under KOC and you would have had enough time to evaluate him and maybe let him take over. We just picked the wrong QB two years ago and now have nothing to show for it and need a redo. I am not a fan of playing a rookie QB out of the gates. We had the opportunity to groom one and we whiffed.

Confused how we get Jones AND Darrisaw. Because without that, this boils down to an argument that you'd rather have Jones than Darrisaw....and I find that a little hard to believe.

I think Jones has little hissy fits when things don't go his way or he messes up and this is how he responds.
