RIP Nichelle

Whoopi Goldberg back in 2009 hosted a thing called "The Captain's Summit" with Shatner, Nimoy, Stewart, and Frakes.  At one point she said that seeing Nichols as Uhura was the only show that gave her hope that black people were even in the future, because all the other scifi shows up to that point had all been all white. Plus Uhura wasn't just furniture, she was a lieutenant on the bridge who had an important job.

Although the episode "Plato's Stepchildren" is famous for the first interracial kiss on TV between Kirk and Uhura (Telepathically forced by aliens), it was supposed to be even more provocative.  The scene was originally written for Uhura to kiss McCoy, but the network feared they'd lose Southern affilliates and advertisers by the truckload so they changed it to Kirk.

Yup...That inter-racial kiss was a real big deal back then!
