Spielman Personally Scouting College Quaterbacks
- According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Vikings' Rick Spielman was one of at least five NFL general managers scheduled to be at Heinz Field on Thursday night to watch No. 25 Pittsburgh against North Carolina and top quarterback prospects Sam Howell of the Tar Heels and Kenny Pickett of the Panthers.
- Ben GoesslingA #Vikings tidbit to file away: GM Rick Spielman was in Nevada over the weekend to evaluate QB Carson Strong, according to a source. Not sure if this is good or bad… ;)
I wonder if he is going to the game this weekend in LA, there is a QB named Herbert he should check out :(
If I were the Wilfs, I would ask Spielman which QB he wants to pick, then pick someone else!
Typical. gets excited about QBs in what looks like a very average prospect pool.
I don't want him picking a qb. Seriously he doesn't know what he is doing. I feel like he has committed plenty of fireable offenses draft wise.
Dont you suppose he ought to be out prospecting often?
@"AGRforever" said: Dont you suppose he ought to be out prospecting often? No doubt. I feel like your GM should be looking at the top 5-10 QBs every year.
Sure he can look but he picked Ponder so his track record is not good. This is a concern. He needs people that are better equipped to make the choice that is if he is still here next year.

Not saying he shouldn’t’ be, just not sure I want him taking another swing for the Vikings!

It cant be north of 25% on first rounders can it?
@"AGRforever" said:Are you confident that he can pick a qb? Also consider the rest of his drafts. He has had some hits but he has had his share of misses.@"Vikergirl" said: Sure he can look but he picked Ponder so his track record is not good. This is a concern. - His track record with first round picks is not good
- he missed on opportunities to draft highly rated QBs
- He mishandled the QB situation of the team
- there is no real expereince depth behind Cousins
- Does not have a long term or tactical plan to upgrade the team besides volume draftt picks (allowed the entire defense to be retooled in one year, winning meaningless games instead of reassuring and working with management and coaches to secure a more favorable draft position, focussed on draft capital and volume picks instead of moving up and drafting identified player(s), wasting volume picks on low level draft picks that are later cut which could have been packaged to move up)
- Seems to know how to win the draft day team of the year that flames out a few years later.
- not sure what his plan is in free agency since recently we have been basement shopping with one year deals aka pushing the problem down the road
- the team cap situation is not great

@"Vikergirl" said:Yes, if given the league average number of picks at QB I’m sure even a blind squirel would figure it out.@"AGRforever" said:Are you confident that he can pick a qb? Thanks, Rick.....just leave the file on the desk on the way out.
@"AGRforever" said:I can say definitively yes to your first question. Anyone taking Ponder at that spot made a horrible choice, and I don’t hate Spielman. I certainly hope he does better given another chance, because anyone with a brain could have seen he wasn’t the answer. That was definitely one of the top WTF picks of his tenure.@"Vikergirl" said: Sure he can look but he picked Ponder so his track record is not good. This is a concern. I am really getting pissed more and more with Spielman. He had a chance to draft Mac Jones without giving up anything and he passed.
I cant say enough how frustrating it is watching him excel in NE.

I don't think it matters which qb is here unless the coaching staff can get the most out of the qb. This coaching staff is not it.
We had our QB of the future available last year in Mac Jones. I was furious then and even more upset now that he’s having the success I expected. Spielman is lousy at figuring QB’s, but then again most people are.
