Vikings Trade For TE

I don't really have a problem with him much and he's done some great drafts, but this reminds of the kicker we traded for a 5th for Vedvik.

100% this...
@"StickyBun" said:Rick on draft day? Very good at manipulating the draft to acquire players... trades right before the season... significant overpays... Vedvik for a 5th... Yannick for a 2nd... Bradford for a 1st and 4th... WTF...@"Wetlander" said: Spielman makes some really head scratching trades sometimes... this is awful. This guy wasn't going to make the Jets roster and we gave up a 4th round pick??? There are fringe roster guys getting traded for 6th and 7th round pick swaps or future 2023 6ths and 7ths...
I mean I would understand if this was Zach Ertz or Evan Engram, but Chris Herndon? He got suckered.

Comp is definitely rich, but we were 14th in waiver claim position, and at least one team, the Giants, might have been in the mix. But, yeah, gotta think Ertz was a better move.
Guys got some wheels. If he can either become a reasonable replacement for ISJ or (with luck) a TE2 for 12 personnel when ISJ returns, nobody's going to care much about the 50 or so slot drop in the 22 draft.

Yep. I’m a fan of Rick’s overall work too but these Aug/Sept deals have not worked out well for us at all.Not to mention, we recently gave the Chiefs Mike Hughes for a 6th/7th pick swap! And that was for a former 1st rounder at a more valuable position, who can also return kicks. I’m still scratching my head at that move too.
I know Herndon has some potential but even if he pans out this was an overpay. Oh well. Let’s see how he works out I guess.
2015: TJ Clemmings (Not active since 2018)
2016: Willie Beavers (Falcons, 2 NFL Games Played)
2017: Jaleel Johnson (Texans), Ben Gedeon (cut 2020)
2018: Jalyn Holmes (on 2021 roster)
2019: Dru Samia (Waived 2021)

Chris Herndon (4th) would fit right in on this list though
Just read that ISJ is out for the season. I'm OK w/ this trade for these reasons:
As noted above, after canceling out the picks, the compensation is a high 5th.
Minny gets the services of Herndon for at least this season.
NYJ is paying the majority of his salary. Minny is only responsible for the vet minimum. I think this was a big factor in this trade, as trading for a TE w/ a larger contract, such as Ertz, might've jeopardized their ability to extend O'Neill.
If he leaves after this season, Minny will receive a comp pick in 2023
I'm a big of a critic of RS as their is, but this trade doesn't seem so bad to me.

Yeah, a bit of overly dramatic responses. We needed a TE, I think Rick knew what the ISJ outcome was going to be. A 5th round pick for a cheap starter? Hardly worth slashing and burning.

I suppose one could interpret that as a bit of an indictment of the Vikings scouting/drafting acumen.
Why did the trade fall through? Sounds like Philadelphia’s asking price for the tight end was too high.

The HC and GM must be convinced this Viking's team could be pretty good.

Wow, now that would've been something. Happy with the Herndon trade, but would've been jacked to see Goedert.

Herndon, pre Gase, pre injury, was damn fine.

He sure was a hot commodity in a lot of fantasy conversations the last few years. And he's even younger than Goedert, which seems shocking to me. There's a decent chance he ends up better than Goedert. God knows his surround/coach/QB didn't help him any. Let's put it this way, I'd rather have Herndon for a 50 slot day-3 downgrade than Goedert for the 2nd rounder the Eagles were likely asking.
