Two potential outcomes here for #Vikings TE Irv Smith Jr. If the surgery is a Meniscectomy then he will be out 2-4 weeks. If the surgery is a Meniscus Repair he will be out for the season, RTP 6-8 months.

#Vikings starting TE Irv Smith Jr. is expected to undergo surgery for a meniscus injury that will sideline him for at least the start of the regular season, per sources.

Exact timetable TBD for now, but Smith seemed poised for a breakout season and now it’s on hold.

Conklin has been out too. Wonder if Steve Jordan is busy.

Regardless of Conklin's health, the Vikings need to add a TE. Brandon Dillon is fine, but not someone you want playing a ton. Zach Davidson isn't ready yet.

Trey Burton, Tyler Eifert, and Virgil Green are among the top FAs and there will be options on the waiver wire on Tues.

Damn, the one starter on offense we've been allowed to watch. There goes Cousins' crutch too. ISJ appeared to be the only weapon he trusted without AT and JJ in the game.

Then why would you even try to repair it? Just get it the hell out and be ready for week 2.

Sounds like that timeline might have been written for non-athletes...

Usually, meniscus removal patients recover quickly. Most patients begin normal walking in a few days, as long as severe pain is not present. Running and sports activity may resume in approximately eight weeks.

Some free agents: Tyler Eifert, Trey Burton, Jordan Reed (retired)
Trade targets: Zach Ertz, Kyle Rudolph (doubt the money works for either)

Best option is probably Conklin if he's healthy. Then sign the best of the cuts on Tuesday for depth.

Meniscus repair IS used for athletes.  In some cases, despite the tear the player can keep 95% of their meniscus.  Very limited blood flow slows the healing process big time.  For some athletes, it’s worth it.  In Smith’s case, he’s very young and may have a long career ahead of him.  Taking out a lot of meniscus at this point may be good for the team, not so good for him and future earnings.  Judgment call.

Because last time we were desperate for a player a trade with Philly worked out so good for the Vikes.

Holy crap.  He was slated to be a big part of this offense. This s just a gut punch. When did it happen? I wasn’t aware of his injury during the last preseason game.

Browns have been looking to offload Njoku too. With the season two weeks away, do it early if you're going to make a move. If Conklin's hammy was so minor, why isn't he practicing yet.

Another guy that seems like he’s hurt all the time.  Remember when he was out for 3 or 4 weeks last season after injuring himself during his TD celebration?  How do all these guys get hurt practicing?

There is not any confirmed timeline on his downtime.  The entire season is not lost because of one TE.  Conklin played quite well when called upon last year as well.  If Smith is out the entire year, then I guess we can start to worry a little.  Until then, people need to settle down.   He probably wasn't vaccinated anyway.  :)

Looks like Waterboy's sole purpose is to insult posters. Time to give him the NJVike treatment.

This sucks. Get well, Irv!

In regards to the team, I know we’re “all-in” on this year but at least to date, that has not included using future draft capital to do it.

If Irv really is out all year that hurts pretty bad, but I still hope they don’t trade away early picks right now. If we start out 6-2 or something and think we can make a legit run then maybe at that time you think about it. Maybe. But right now there’s too many question marks to justify an Ertz deal.
