Justin Fields
He’s looked up and down in this first preseason game, but definitely shown flashes.
Vikings were rumored to have some interest in him… it would have been very, very difficult to match or beat the Bears offer to the Giants for the pick to draft him. I get that. All that said… it would be a lot of fun to be watching him right now and getting super hyped up as a fan.
Instead we get to watch Covid Cousins for a series or 2, and a coach that doesn’t even trust Mond to take a snap.
I know this post is gonna annoy some as overly pessimistic and I don’t blame you. I’m just so ready for this team to have a franchise QB. Sorry for whining. Fields could still suck and Browning could still be great—or Mond— but at this moment I can’t help but look longingly at a young QB who was seemingly within arms length, and we didn’t land. Oh, and Mac Jones looked promising too.
I was thrilled with the pick up of Darrisaw, Watts and Mond for our first rounder instead of moving up for Fields and thought it was the right move, but right now after the Cousins and Mond drama and the Darrisaw injury, I wish we had done the trade up for Fields :)
Mond will never see the field as a starter at the beginning of a NFL season. He makes me long for Blaine Gabbert.
Like I said during the draft - Fields was a steal for the Bears. Any other draft (this QB loaded) he would have been a Top 3 pick - IMO.
Only 1 preseason game but he has been getting rave reviews all camp and he delivered in his first game action.
I have been trying to follow all the Top QB drafted and even before their first games Fields was being talked about the most.
I would put in this order (again just camp so FWIW :)
1 - Fields by a lot
2 - Lance
3 - Wilson
4 - Mac Jones
5 - Lawrence

Yea, I know because we discussed pre, during, and post draft. I was and still am higher on Fields then you are and you are much higher on Lance then I. Supposedly, Lance has looked really good in camp that's why I listed that order. The order is camp hype ranking not my ranking :)

Everyone that gets drafted in the league has some tools. QB's generally get over-drafted based on hitting on the long shot. The fact that his mechanics have always looked robotic, tell me he is probably overthinking and scared to let his instincts work for him or he lacks instincts is a real possibility. He's not a natural, and if you don't have that by now you likely aren't going to magically get it at the NFL level.
Justin Fields is a WAY better NFL prospect than Kellen Mond. Its just a fact. Does that guarantee anything moving forward? Of course not. It appears the Vikings were interested in Fields but it was too expensive for their tastes, happens every year in the Draft. Odds are against Mond developing into a starting QB in the NFL, but its certainly not impossible.
I once saw a good-looking rookie QB go 18-25, 166 yards, 1 TD pass with 3 runs for 38 yards in his first preseason game.

Mitch Trubisky still didn't pan out. Take the preseason for what it is, which is to say meaningless in terms of projecting a rookie QB.

Lawrence will be solid, but folks will wonder...is that all there is? I thought he was supposed to be the 2nd coming of Andrew Luck. He'll be out of the NFL in 6 years.

Nice, I like bold predictions. I too, have watched about 40 drafts and attended 2 in NYC.I do think all 5 of the 1st round QB's drafted will start before the end of this season. I can see Andy, Jimmy and Cam getting dinged and in steps the rookie "hope".
What are the odds of drafting a first round QB and him becoming an everyday starter after 3 years? I estimate less then 30% and that is for first rounders. For example the 4 guys drafted who are entering year 3 are Murray, D. Jones, Haskins and Lock. So who remain an every day starting QB after this year? 1 maybe 2.
So if you just go by odds with 5 QB's drafted in the first round this year odds are maybe 2 become everyday starting QB's after 3 years. Then you add in injury (like Wentz) or legal (potentially Watson) and the odds start to dip below 20%.
But odds can be all over the place from year to year. That is why I was so high on going after a QB this draft because I think - Lawrence, Wilson, and Fields will be Top 20 NFL QB's in 3 years with Lance having a shot as well. I am not sold on Mac Jones. I think Lance is going to the best situation so he will have time to develop and I think he needs it even more then Fields. The knock on Fields was primarily because he was playing at OSU with a crappy QB lineage and that he is a 1 read guy according to some analysts. I don't think so, I re watched a bunch of his games and I saw a ton of second option/read and check down throws. Just watch the Clemson highlights and he does it all. He goes through his progressions just fine. Then their is the simple offense system knock but who had a more simple scheme then Lance. He basically chucked it deep or ran and only played one full season of games like a man against boys. I'm just going by my experienced eye, as you are, but I think Da Bears got a steal in Fields who would have been a Top 3 pick in almost every draft before 2021.
Of course, I hope I am wrong on Fields being a franchise QB for the Bears but I also said before and during the draft that I would not mind us taking him so I would have been fine with him as a Viking. Of course that depended on what we would have to give up but we could have moved into the Giants spot and grabbed him instead of the Bears. I think we were toying/gauging with the Panthers for Slater not Fields and we make a joke of an offer anyway. After all the dust settled I was thrilled with us getting Darrisaw, Davis and Mond in the move back but I also would have been very happy with a move up for Fields.

Aaron Donald is the best player in this draft. If I had the 1st overall pick, I'd take Donald over Clowney
Justin Jefferson is the best WR in this class. Better than both Lamb and Jeudy. Jalen Reagor will be a bust.
Laquon Treadwell has no juice. He's the most overrated WR in this class.
