Day 3 Of Mini Camp
@"BarrNone55" said:Obviously we should fire Zimmer, he is so oldschool and can't relate to the players. /sarcasmThe Vikings are ending minicamp early after canceling Thursday’s third and final practice. Minnesota had really good attendance throughout OTAs and minicamp so this seems like Mike Zimmer’s way of rewarding his team for its participation throughout the spring.
Really tho, he gets it. Other teams may have chosen virtual attendance or other more player friendly methods. Zim likely recognizes that and is rewarding the players for working well with the team. He isn't a fake hard ass or a soft players coach, he is genuine and the players recognize it.

Zimmer is a tough one for me to figure out...Bit of a chameleon. He makes decisions like today and comes across as authentic, but he also has a history of throwing players under the bus publicly.IMO this is his year to shine - or it could be a last hurrah for him.

I have seen that before, but can't remember precise examples. Is it part of him being authentic? Most coaches talk in platitudes and coach speak, but Zim seems more real, in his concern for the players as humans and in being critical of them, or hurt by betrayal perhaps. But yes, this year will shine on him, good or bad. He has the pieces for a great D, and most are returning rather than brand new unfamiliar pieces. I guess my biggest concern is what he has planned for the D. He has been genius in many ways, but occasionally has gotten to complex and had to dial it back.
Barr coasting is a more recent example that comes to mind...
But yah, pressure is on Zimmer this year, KC too.
They've got to get a lot of new D pieces to fit together (think about the DL and D backfield) and I suspect 3/5 of the OL could be new or playing new positions too (Darrisaw, Davies, Cleveland).
Lots of reasons for optimism, but lots has to fall into place and things need to gel.
As far as Zimmers D's go, the last top one he had was what? 17? Not sure if they were top 10 in 18 or 19? Rules have changed so much to challenge D's and the Double A Gap isn't quite what it once was.
But the players with pedigree appear to be there this year and I subscribe to the theory that players make the coaches in the NFL. So arrow is certainly up.
Competition brings out the best in people.
