Kellen Mond over Davis Mills....why?

Not saying it was the wrong move for Minnesota, at all. But I wonder in the depths of the draft war room what the reasons were exactly. I know the Vikings spent a bunch of time with Mond doing due diligence. I'd love to have seen the scouts write-ups on each player for the Vikings' scouting department.
Two sets of numbers 46 to 13 and 1358 to 287, that is the number of games Mond started compared to Davis and the difference in the number of pass attempts. If you think about a program like Texas A&M and how they have been a great passing offense, it says a lot that Mond had been the starting since his freshman year. I think that is very understated. Also, Mond fits the mold of the current NFL QBs like Mahones and Josh Allen.
Also, I wonder if Justin Jefferson working out with Mond was a factor in any way in terms of the feedback he was able to provide.
Exactly. Mond has been a starter in the SEC since he was a freshman... started a ton of games and improved every season. He has a strong arm, has mobility, and makes wow throws. No injury history.
Mills is the complete opposite. It always gets mentioned that he was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school... Who cares? Lots of highly touted guys that never lived up to their rating. He's been hurt a bunch, he's very inexperienced with only 11 college starts, and his TDs to pass attempts is super low. All those raise a ton of red flags.
If I was betting on one of these guys to turn into an NFL starter, it would be Mond. And that's before the Vikings drafted him. The "mystery" of Davis Mills is more intriguing than the actual player.
my answer was going to be simply this... Mills played in the PAC and Mond in the SEC.... I dont know if I have ever said this, but I just dont trust QBs coming out of colleges in states with a beach on the pacific.
This aint rocket science, Kubiak has an Aggie history...That means "inside scoop" + sentimental connection
Kubiak started his coaching career at Texas A&M University as an offensive quality control coach from 2010–11 and as a graduate assistant and inside receivers coach in 2012. During his three years with the Aggies, Kubiak earned his master's degree in human resource development.[2

I have to admit I was a little disappointed when Trask went off the board two picks before us. A lot of mixed opinions on Mond as far as boom or bust potential but I've warmed up to the pick and his potential. Have heard a ton of NFL guys who love Mills though.
Out of the second tier of QB's that were drafted, Mond was definitely my top choice for the reasons listed above.
Mond has the flow of a 70's electric football QB star...

Some pretty good ones played H.S. in California: Brady, Fouts, Elway, Rodgers, Warren Moon, Jim Plunkett, Carson Palmer, Randall Cunningham, just to name a few.
And our very own Joe Kapp (not born in Cali, but played high school there and college).

How about ones that aren't near dead? And it's not a hard line, but it seems in the last 20 years there have been more hot prospects from the PAC that dont amount to shit as pros than other conferences.

Well, considering there are only 32 starting QBs in the NFL and maybe what, 5-7 franchise guys.....its not like any conference has a stranglehold on good NFL QBs. In the last 20 years, there have been a bunch of hot NFL prospects that have flamed out from EVERY conference. PAC-10 is no worse or better. Right now, 2 of the top 3 QBs in the NFL are from California (Rodgers-Brady). Mahomes was born in Texas, Russell Wilson in Ohio. Watson is from Georgia. LaMar Jackson is from Florida. Josh Allen for the Bills is from California. So I think you are being a little hard on the Pacific coast born players and those that played in the PAC-10.
Probably because Mond offers more in the way of mobility and running ability. Plus, there are a lot of little things that suggest we may not have seen the best from Mond yet. Like Mond winning against very good teams, improving every season, etc.
I didn't really pay much attention to Davis but I know not all teams were sold on his shoulder. I also know he can't move. He's probably less mobile than Kirk Cousins.
What I'm curious about is if the Vikings would've taken Trask if he'd been there.

Mills did run an unofficial 4.58 forty at his pro day, so I'm not so sure about that lack of mobility.

Agreed, and he certainly has more movement skills than Cousins.

Yeah, that shocked everyone and is probably why he went from 7th rounder to 3rd rounder practically overnight. But sometimes good straight line speed doesn't translate to mobility in the pocket.

I never said anything about where they are born, its about the level of competition in the PAC vs the other major conferences especially the South East teams, I just think that west coast college QBs end up over hyped and their lack of consistent quality opponents makes their stats a little skewed when comparing them to their peers that played in other areas.

Running a forty is one thing, being a good runner is another. Mills' total rushing stats at Stanford were 86 total yards, meaning he likes to be a pocket passer. Mond on the other hand, ran for over 1,600 yards. While I'm not the highest on Mond, he is certainly a good runner where the jury is still out on Mills

Yeah, it's like comparing Kirk Cousins and Case Keenum. Which is more elusive? That's obvious. But their 40 times were similar: Cousins 4.84 and Keenum 4.82. Pocker passers like Carson Palmer (4.65) and Andrew Luck (4.59) were nowhere near as elusive as, say, Patrick Mahomes (4.8). I think mobility in the pocket is more about vision and quickness than speed. All that said, Mond isn't particularly elusive either. But he is a guy who can hurt you with the run.
