With the Mack signing, the Vikings have covered their bases if he's not, but it sure would be a nice bonus to see Hughes play a full year.

It remains to be seen what possibly could happen with #Vikings CB Mike Hughes' roster status after signing of CB Mackensie Alexander. Regardless, I was told today Hughes is fully healthy. He's recovered after spending final 10 weeks of 2020 on injured reserve due to neck injury.

I am not so sure until there is contact what his status is. I wish him well regardless.

Perfect.  Love having him as our 5th CB

If they kids take a step forward (which they will
as they have experience, an upcoming training camp, and a pass rush), this CB room is stacked

I think the important discretion is that he's healthy per himself/his reps. Every player also is in the best shape of their lives before OTAs. Ultimately it will be up to the Vikings to determine if he's a liability on the field with his neck. We'll see how that plays out.

Would there be any cap savings if they cut him before the start of the season? His history of neck injuries is a big concern and with the veteran additions at CB and maybe a mid to late round pick to come, I don't see much reason to keep him around. I know there was hype that he was supposed to be a returner when they drafted him, but that never materialized.

Dead cap around 1.9, cap savings around 1.1.

You don't see much reason to keep him around? What if he stays healthy? I mean...that IS a possibility, however remote. Because the talent is there. He just has to stay healthy. If he's released--and I know some are predicting that--it would be 100% about his health, not his talent.

He certainly could bounce back and start to look like the player they thought he was going to be. The hard thing with his injury history is that even if he beats out the other corners and starts playing well, would you feel comfortable giving him a second contract? I'm sure there is more nuance with his health that medical staff would need to determine and maybe some of his injuries aren't as bad as they sound, but right now I'd view him as the 5th CB with some big question marks.

His biggest value to the Vikings may be as a kick and punt returner

No way Hughes get cut IMHO -- trade for a conditional draft pick (5th?).  Has a 1.8 million salary for 2021; I can see a team rolling the dice on that with Hughes' talent.

I can see the Vikings rolling the dice on that. Won't cost 'em a dime. The way injuries *%#@# this team last year, I can see Zimmer wanting to cover all bases. Hughes was a 1st round draft pick who actually showed some talent early on. IIRC, he had a pick six in his first start.

Hughes was our CB1 going into the draft last year. We lost X, Waynes, and Mack in free agency and we hadn't drafted anyone yet. That same guy is, what, CB5 right now? If he's healthy, keep him. Stick him at safety if you have to make the numbers work.
