Welcome Xavier Woods
The #Vikings aren’t done: They’re signing former #Cowboys safety Xavier Woods to a 1-year deal worth up to $2.25M, source said. A perfect system fit and high upside.

This should be interesting. Dallas fans are basically saying 'good riddance' due to a poor year and his comments in late 2020.
Quite a few were predicting Woods to Vikings. Really like the one-year deals. P2, Woods, Mac, all will be trying to boost their value which is good incentive.
Here's a blurb about PFF predicting a lot more money for Woods.
Flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Pro Football Focus has projected the Dallas Cowboys will retain starting safety Xavier Woods with a four-year free-agent contract.
Ranked No. 50 on PFF’s list of the top 100 unsigned NFL players, Woods is forecast to net a $25 million extension — averaging $6.25 million annually — when the market opens next month.
Woods entered the league as a versatile safety with slot coverage skills and a sixth-round draft steal as he’s developed into a solid free safety. He ranks in the middle of the pack from a coverage standpoint when lined up deep, but he’s been excellent when lined up closer to the line of scrimmage, making him a good fit for teams that play with interchangeable safeties. He can still dabble in the slot at times, and the Cowboys are doing more of that in 2020, but it hasn’t been Woods’ strong suit to this point in his NFL career. His four season grades have ranged from 65.0 to 73.0.

I kinda like what he said. Because it's the truth.
Like that he's only 25. Like that he played very well his first three seasons. Coverage grades in the high 70s in both '18 and '19. 2020 was a crap year for him, but Vikings are betting that was an outlier. And not a very pricey bet. Pretty reasonable to assume that it was. But again, one-year contract. Prove it and get paid.
Have the children look away...

Yes, context always helps. There were no lies told and I saw some accountability in the full message. I like the signing.

Woods, a sixth-round pick in Dallas in 2017, played for new Vikings defensive backs coach Karl Scott at Louisiana Tech in 2015, creating a connection to bring the safety to Minnesota.
Looking at his highlights, he has a bit of Sendejo in him, even though he's more of a FS and at least prior to last year was decent in coverage. Seems like a good low risk signing to plug a hole at FS. Maybe he thrives in Zimmer's system and gets his career back on track or maybe he can hold the fort while they develop a rookie safety. They still have issues to solve in the trenches, but they've at least tried to stabilize the secondary without burning through draft picks again.

Zimmer's head must have exploded more than once last year with that secondary and DL. I can't believe he was completely on-board with all those db toddlers going into September trying to cover NFL caliber WR's.
These one year signing's are interesting strategy. I wouldn't characterize it as boom or bust as they have some real younger talent to pair these veterans with.
I'd love to see a MacAlex for example find his footing and be a long-time contributor here.
Hopefully a Dalvin in the trenches and a healthy Hunter helps the secondary as much as getting new bodies back in the backfield.
I really don't want to have to witness another Steckel'esque D from the Vikings.

They were clearly running on defense last year, between people coming back from injuries/Covid list and FA additions, they already have close to a new defense and we haven't even had the draft yet. I also like that they brought back Alexander and Weatherly, two guys who are already very familiar with Zimmer's system. We will see how all of these new defenders gel, but with more talent and experience, it should be a big difference.
