OL Plan?

I know it's been discussed somewhat but thought maybe putting the discussion in one place might be helpful.

So, what is the plan for our OL? It was one of the worst last year and arguably the one that played the best is with another team. As it sits right now, our OL is even worse than last year. Do we have a basis for a trade with the Ravens for OB that will be exercised closer to the draft? Are we still hoping to pick someone up in FA? Tackles are pretty much gone. There are still a few possibilities for OG. Are we promoting our current players to starting positions when they couldn't breach the starting line-up of a an already bad OL last year? Are we just crossing our fingers for the draft? Something has to give.

Rick's top secret oline plan is so secret even he doesn't know what it is.

Which isn't really much of a change from the last 10 years of the Ricky Regime.

That is funny and sad at the same time. I have no expectations whatsoever for the OL because this has been an ongoing struggle. I will believe it when I see it.

Yeah, that's a problem. You can probably get him at a discount, but what good does it do if he doesn't help you until 8 weeks in? If they're indeed interested, it could be a forward looking thing, which is good, but does it change the way you draft? Do you pass on Darrisaw because you have Fisher? I don't think you can. Do you put O'Neill on the left until Fisher is ready? So many questions.

I'd guess that's where Rashod Hill comes into play. Whether it's Fisher or a rookie, maybe Hill gets the nod first until the other is ready to step in.

Here's another LT idea from Kiper:

Trade: The Vikings jump five spots for an elite talentWith top offensive tackle Penei Sewell still on the board, I'm projecting the Vikings to move up five spots to get their instant starter at left tackle. That could cost a lot of capital; Minnesota leads the NFL in total picks in this class (11), although it doesn't have a second-rounder as a result of the trade for pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue. This would likely cost at least Minnesota's second-rounder in 2022 and likely more.
For the Broncos and new general manager George Paton, this is about adding value and not reaching for a defender at No. 9 that they could get at No. 14, while also acquiring premium picks next year.
9. Minnesota Vikings (via mock trade with DEN)Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
I like the fit here, particularly with Riley Reiff leaving in free agency. Sewell is an elite talent, and if this quarterback class wasn't so strong, he might be a lock for the top five. The Vikings have had offensive line issues for years, but Sewell would plug their hole on the left side. An elite O-line covers up roster flaws, and this is a step toward improving the entire offense. If Minnesota stays at No. 14 or does the opposite approach and trades down, keep an eye on safety. With Anthony Harris gone in free agency, there's a void there next to Harrison Smith.
Notable free-agent additions: DT Dalvin Tomlinson, CB Patrick Peterson, DE Stephen Weatherly
Notable free-agent losses: S Anthony Harris, TE Kyle Rudolph, OT Riley Reiff, RB Mike Boone

Hard to believe Sewell goes that low, but considering we tried to trade up for Wirf last year, I could see it.

It would suck to lose our '22 2nd but getting a LT that could play day 1 and be paired with O'Neill going forward sure would be nice.

Three things on Sewell:

1. There are real immaturity issues there. So how do the team in the top 5-6 picks view that vs. the alternatives including Slater who has a highly regarded character
2. Recency bias - Whether teams admit it or not, players who opted out are going to get pushed down the board or at least will lose out on tie-breakers vs. player who have more recent film
3. The most popular landing spot for Sewell was to Cincy who just signed Reiff. They can bump Williams inside to guard but do you pass on a WR or Pitts? Hard to say.

So as unrealistic as it seems there is a real chance Sewell at least gets to #6 where Philly has to make a decision. Could easily see another team making the plunge to move up before he gets to #9 though.

@"Geoff Nichols" could you expand on the maturity issues?

Yeah that's a huge red flag and based on the Vikings' recent drafts, that might even take him off our board completely in the first, as insane as that might've sounded a month ago.
Also a good point you brought up about how we tried to trade up for Wirfs last year. I had forgotten that.
I can't think of many teams who've traded into the top 10 for an O-Lineman. And if we did move I personally hope it would be for a QB the Vikings have conviction in. That said, I would be very excited to shore up the line. It's long overdue.

And I could see him falling. He's not without flaws. And all it takes is one team to like Slater more, which isn't too hard to imagine. Also wouldn't surprise me too much to see AVT go higher than everyone thinks. He doesn't have Sewell's enormous upside, but he might be the cleanest OL in the draft. There's also Darrisaw. Man, Vikings really should have a couple of nice players to choose from even if they stay at #14.

I don't know all the details. But there is a consensus opinion in the scouting community that he doesn't take training/coaching too seriously. Basically the way I understood it is that in college he was so much bigger/faster/stronger than anyone it meant he didn't have to try off the field nearly as much as he'll have to in the NFL. So can he treat is like a job? Questionable.

What I know is that Sewell is extremely talented and has Trent Williams esq upside. But he is not the "sure thing" the media paints him to be.

@"Geoff Nichols" not too surprising. Maybe being challenged in practice would light a fire. Maybe he just continues to dominate at the next level without trying hard.

The Trent Williams comp is spot on. Got some nasty to him. Cristobal has previously mentioned Sewell could easily carry 375 lbs and not miss a beat. The fact that he excels in so many thing we want to do on O is exciting. But, I doubt he falls outside the Top 5. Unless he totally blows his interviews if they have any.

Man, I miss the Combine.

Our 1 and first 3 should be enough juice to get to Denver's pick. If the value chart is worth a damn.

McGinn's anonymous scouts:
Penei Sewell, Oregon (6-foot-6, 330 pounds): Started 20 games at left tackle in 2018 and 2019 before opting out in 2020. “I compared him to (Tony) Boselli but with quicker feet,” one scout said. “Dominant run and pass blocker. It’s very seldom you find a big-time athlete that is nasty, too. Anthony Munoz and Boselli, guys like that, they really liked to put guys on their tail. But, he didn’t play this year.” Won’t turn 21 until mid-October. “His deal will be character,” a second scout said. “It’s been easy for him. I don’t know that he’s 100 percent pro right now. He has to deal with some growing pains in terms of professionalism. But the guy is tough and passionate on the field.”
Comes from a football family. “Every time I circle back and watch him, I just don’t see it,” said a third scout. “He’s not that gifted with his feet. He doesn’t really play that physical or strong. He can get in the way with things, but he’s not a really good finisher and his balance isn’t that great. His technique is off. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done.”
