Stephen Weatherly says he’s back with the Vikings

Defensive end Stephen Weatherly spent his first four NFL seasons with the Vikings and he says he is headed back to the team for the 2021 season.
Weatherly signed a two-year deal with the Panthers as a free agent last year, but got released by Carolina last month. In an Instagram post on Thursday, Weatherly wrote that he is back with the team for another tour of duty.
The Vikings have not made any announcement about Weatherly’s return.
Weatherly started the first nine games of the 2020 season, but spent the rest of the year on injured reserve after hurting his finger. He had 67 tackles, six sacks, and two forced fumbles in his first stint with the Vikings.
Weatherly is a solid rotational DE who can rush from the outside or inside. He’s back to working with Andre Patterson and the Vikings after a disappointing season with the Panthers.

Odenigbo was more productive after leaving for a year and coming back, could be the same with Weatherly.
I wonder if Ant Harris and Eric Wilson will be returning to us next year?

Harris posted pictures/videos on his Instagram Story showing dozens of moving boxes within his apartment, so no, he will not be back next year

Hi....
Stephen Weatherly said his possible $500,000 in incentives on #Vikings deal related to sacks & he first can get extra money starting at 3 sacks They'll be considered not-likely bonuses for cap purposes since he didn't have any sacks in 2020. So wouldn't possibly hit cap til 2022

Weatherly returning helps the Dline.
Every team needs guys that can make plays, are smart and excellent teammates.
Weatherly checks all the boxes IMHO.
Read his BIO history. He's extremely smart and talented. He plays 8? instruments. I believe parents are both anesthesiologist. As far as I can tell he has a turd factor of ZERO.
Some guys just fit in certain systems with certain coaches, I hope he has an amazing year.

I mean he (and Wilson) could go to another team as a UFA this year (2021) but get waived and come back to Minnesota in 2022. A number of our marginal FAs who leave for "greener pastures" tend to be back here after a year away. Hey, we could bring Mac Alexander back this year...
I'm lost? Is it because Weatherly was released that he was able to sign pre-FA period? Where as FA's contract come to a close the day before FA starts?

Our defense is saved!
I feel a little numb now...

Yeah it's like recycling crummy assistant coaches... the Formula for Success!

Yep.
Was working on putting together some proposed moves for the Vikings this off-season and although I didn't add Weatherly I did go down the route of them bringing back their DEs with added depth. DE really isn't this teams issue, the lack of an internal pass rush is where they will need to focus their remaining efforts this offseason.

Yeah, maybe. It's not like Harris will get a super long term deal...I think Wilson gets a longer deal so I would think he would be less likely. It's going to be an interesting offseason to say the least.
I hope this isn't their only DE acquisition because while a nice rotational piece, Weatherly isn't a starter, which is sorely needed.
Who does he knock off the roster? As of now rotational DEs are Brailford, Holmes, Mata'afa, Odenigbo, Wonnum, Willekes, & Yardbrough. That's 8 reserve DEs including Weatherly.
Does this mean Odenigbo won't be tendered?

I think Odenigbo will be tendered. As a rotational piece he's probably well worth the 3rd level tender. And the Vikings could feasibly go into '21 with Hunter on one side and a combo of the aforementioned on the other. Not ideal. Not what we all want. But if we miss on a DE in free agency and/or the draft, it's still much better than what we had last year. And we have bigger needs at 3T and G.
Still, if we're able to keep Reiff, land a starting 3T and mid-level guard in FA, then DE jumps right back to draft priority #1 IMO.
