ESPN’s Courtney Cronin was tasked with giving a bold prediction for the Vikings. Her pick? That the Vikings will be part of the quarterback carousel in free agency. Here’s what she wrote:

“If Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers really want Kirk Cousins, now’s the time for Minnesota to pull off a trade that will create freedom to reconstruct other parts of the roster. The Vikings could get out of the financial commitment they made to Cousins when he signed a two-year extension last March that comes with a $31 million cap hit for 2021 and go a different direction at the position. If that comes in the form of Jimmy Garoppolo and a second-round pick (they currently don’t have one), the Vikings should jump at the opportunity.”
I want to preface this by saying that I think Cousins is one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. Also, the team’s regression in 2020 was mostly not his fault. That said, I think if the Vikings could get out from Cousins long term, the future of the franchise would be better. Cousins is good, but he’s not among the elite quarterbacks of the league. I used to think he could theoretically be good enough for Minnesota to go on a deep playoff run and win a Super Bowl. But now, I’m not so sure. It would behoove the team to keep looking for a quarterback, however long that take =============================================================== That whole premise is silly imo. Now Lance or one of the other top 3 QB's in the draft? Giddy up.   So let's trade one of the better QB's in the NFL for JG and for some draft capital?  Only way the Vikings are going to move from a better QB in NFL to a very rare elite one is via draft and some luck.  Garoppolo aint bad, but it's not a clear enough improvement at the position imo. And there are other ways to get that 2nd rd pick back if they want (or get another late #1).

Does JG contractually help significantly more than how KC's is currently structured? Maybe thats the $mm question.

I don't know,... maybe mediocrity is a byproduct that comes from leadership?

I've written a poem which sums up this situation, I call it "Guaranteed Money" :

Rick is the leader
the leader who signed Kirk
the last piece of the puzzle he said
I got guaranteed dough she said!
Kirk is having a field day
playing quarterback in his purple lingerie
fans say give back some of the money
Kirk says no that's MY Honey!
and besides
you think Ricky can take more dough and build a championship roster with a good oline and then we win the Super Bowl after 10 years of failing to do so damn you must be out of your flippin' gourd...
Extension time!!!!!!!!!

I think you've broken ground on new poetic syntax here. Haiku-like, but not quite....anaphora usage with 'Kirk' being used as a repeat pattern. This would work well at Spoken Poetry night at Java the Hut, the coffee bar around the corner.

Me likey.

Hey when I wrap my griping in artistry you actually enjoy it!  =) :p

I tend to doubt any of us fans can tell if a QB's "leadership qualities" exist or not, and whether they generate victories. People said Sam Bradford lacked leadership, too. I don't know, maybe it was true of both of them. If so - do you really think they will get "it" just by handing back some money? Or, if our franchise truly has suffered through 2 of these greedy "I love money not winning" quarterbacks in less than 5 years...do you blame them, or the guy who acquired both of them?

Bonus question: did Case Keenum have leadership qualities? Did they disappear when he signed a bigger contract??
