Mahomes is going to get paid
Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have reached agreement on a 10-year -- 10-year! -- contract extension that ties him to Kansas City through the 2031 season, league sources tell ESPN.

Good for him I say...What a move by KC to get their guy.
Let’s say the #Chiefs built in a rider that ensures Mahomes makes 18% of the league cap each of the next 12 years. Let’s also assume the 2021 league cap remains at $198.2M, then increases $10M per year through 2031.

That would mean a 10 year $500M new money extension.

This is what happens when you win a Super Bowl and are only 24 years old. Good kid. He's exactly what the NFL wants to market.
I find it funny that I saw 10 years in the text and was like "Yep, sounds about right". I dont think I would have scratched my head if the number said 13 years. He's worth it and will definitely bring them another super bowl
probably 12% - 13% of cap then...I saw some stat that the most a winning SB Qb had as a % of cap was 12%. I think that was Steve Young.

They definitely have a cap magician to get it done. Good for Mahomes.
Good for him and a bold move by the Chiefs. This kicks in after his 5th year option in 2021. His base salary for 2020 is still under $3 million. 2021 is $24 million, then the "big money" arrives in 2022. Depending on how the base salaries are structured, with the dead money from signing bonuses gone after the 4th year of the extension (2025), years 5-10 could be a relative salary cap bargain for KC.

how/why do we bother to compare the two, Mahomes is so far above KC in terms of being able to carry a team that one really has nothing to do with the other IMO. Mahomes is a game changer, KC is a damn good game manager. I dont know that either will be able to live up to the terms of their deals, but I still say that QBs on rookie deals will be the way of future success if QB contracts continue to escalate the way they are. it makes no sense to sell out at one position if you then have to go bare bones with the rest of the team when you need essentially 25 starters every game IMO.

How the rest of the Chiefs roster will look after Pat Mahomes just took a quarter of the payroll‼️ pic.twitter.com/xjg45z7TOd

He is now the face of the NFL and in two years this contract and structure will look like a very fair and team friendly deal. the Chiefs will make bank on his talent and refocus the NFL landscape back into the heartland.
