Yeah, 10 year old technology is really antiquated in today's electronics world. The kid is fine at community college though, right?  :)

At the bold... that's funny.
While we are at it, don't you think you should upgrade the speakers too? They may be too small for the new receiver.
See the bold part above :-)

This is very good advice...

At the end of the day I did an Apple TV over a Roku cause our house is already filled with IOS and the interconnected possibilities are pretty cool. Got it thrown into the deal too.

Guy @ Best Buy Magnolia told me the avg home theatre system today falls in the $5k-$10k range!  :o

Yep that is because home theater now is whole house media.  You can still do a decent single room that will rival a movie theater for $1,000.  But I have experienced the 10K home theater and it was like going to a movie theater.  Sub shakers in the seats, Dolby 9.1 and 4K 80 inch TV.  It was nice but a little much unless you have a house big enough to have room strictly dedicated to that.  When I was really into it my kids were little and playing a movie to the potential of my current system meant it had to be movie they liked, once they were in bed the levels had to be turned down to where it did not matter.

Apple TV is good as well, streaming media from a phone or Ipad is really nice (if you like Apple devices).  I choose Roku because it was cheap and delivered good video.  If I start traveling again for work I may invest in that direction as it is much easier to carry movie media with you.
