Doogie: 'Vikings very high on Samia'
Saw something last night from an interview Doogie did. Said Vikings are expecting him to snag the RG job. Loved his performance in Game 17 of the season. So the real job up for grabs is LG. Who's going to get it? I know its possible to start Cleveland and have Reiff possibly kick inside, but that's uncertain. I think the odds of that to start the season is less than 50%.

Vocal leader who has cut his teeth with an Oklahoma offensive line that has dripped with aggression and attitude during his four years as a starter. Samia is a loose-limbed, athletic guard whose foot quickness and second-level agility make him much more attractive as a move guard rather than a base-blocking option. His length and movement skills are a big plus, but issues with core strength and body control at the point of attack must be improved in order to survive against NFL power.
First thing out of Samia's mouth after being drafted was how he needed to improve his strength for the NFL. That shouldn't be a concern anymore.
Samia has a little Conrad Dobbler in him...hopefully he grows into an enforcer type player...
Good to hear, but I think releasing Kline was all the proof we needed that they wanted Samia to start there. Or someone. I've heard they're even higher on Udoh and there's been whispers about him moving to guard.
I don't know if Cleveland will play LT or LG, but I think he'll start. Like McGinn said he's a lot like the Green Bay guys, Bulaga and Bakhtiari. Both of those guys started from day one. And Bakhtiari was a 4th rounder. I think the only way EC doesn't start is if someone like Collins or Udoh explodes at LG, in which case we'd probably favor Reiff's experience at LT.
Also think there's a chance Reiff could get cut (for Dalvin money?) if certain players look good in training camp--Udoh and Cleveland in particular.

In retrospect, yeah its pretty obvious. The Kline cut was very surprising then, not so much now. It only made sense if this was the case with Samia.

Hasn't this been said about every O-lineman the Vikings have drafted in recent years?
The zone running scheme is great, but the linemen still need to have the functional strength to pass block when its third and long and everyone knows a pass is coming.
At least Samia has the attitude to give great effort when playing. That is a good starting point.
I think we should kick Reiff inside and let Elflein and Samia fight it out for RG. Elf would look better there as he just isnt as adept against speed as he is power. Collins is first backup if healthy

You just don't usually come out of college with NFL strength, and it's compounded with us drafting lighter faster guys.
The Vikings need to cut or trade Reiff. The Chargers could be a team interested as all the have is Sam Tevi and Trey Pipkins opposite Byran Bulaga.
The Vikings need to save Reiff's cap space to use in better places. After the sign the rookies they will have about 8.75 mil in cap space.
Add in the 8.8 mil for getting rid of Reiff and they now are at about 17.5 mil in cap space.
What can they do with that? Carry it over to 2021 or use it to extend Cook two years.
I would essentially make the next 3 years be for 24 mil with incentives based on snaps played and awards.
They could wait on Cook too.
Next year, O'Neill should be extended with a 5 year 75 mil deal (or thereabouts).
They could give him a 15 mil roster bonus (which is all the cap space carried over) and a 5 mil signing bonus.
His salary for 2021 of $1,080,095 would stay the same.
His salaries from 2022 thru 2025 would be 11, 14, 15, & 15 mil.
His cap hits would be 17.4 in 2021, 12, 15, 16, & 16 mil.
The cap savings from getting rid of an average at his very best Reiff is important.
Ezra Cleveland needs to start from day one. If he struggles they can use Hill and Udoh.
I think next year is a rebuild of sorts and I do not think the inexperienced corners, interior OL, and defensive ends will prove good enough to truly contend for the title.
Keeping Reiff at his current salary is just dumb.
If they do keep him, how many will be saying he needs to go next year or will there still be reasons offered why the Vikings should absorb his 13 mil cap hit next year?

That is why the ideal situation was to swap for Tent Williams salary and give Reiff salary to DC. But I don't think the Redskins even wanted to deal with that.
So if cut he would save us about 9 million this year, correct? Next year if cut would save us even more around 12 million. What is the date for cuts to save $$$? Reason is do we have anytime to see how quickly Cleveland develops

I disagree with this a lot. Getting rid of Reiff is throwing in the towel on 2020. Going into 2020 with 3 question marks on the OLine would be nuts.

If this year was a throw away they needed to part ways with cousins then too. Reiff is the 2nd best OL we have currently and his contract isnt out of line for his performance, it's insane to get rid of him until you have at least seen if Cleveland can play at this level.Either go all in on a rebuild or dont do it, half assing shit leads to years and years of mediocrity.
