Most had Fulton and Johnson both ranked ahead of Gladney, but Gladney has upside after having his meniscus repaired. The Vikings needed a CB and they took a guy who is competitive despite his size and will probably start somewhere in our nickel package.

Here's how the 2020 CB prospects performed in coverage last year per
@PFF. CBs in the bottom left did the best. It's worth noting that C.J. Henderson was much better in 2018 (50% completions, 6.9 YPT).

There were a group of corners rated pretty similarly and once Miami took one at 30, the Vikings were at least able to get on the frontside of the run, so at least they got the player they preferred. I still think they need to draft one more corner to at least get their depth back to decent.

Also, lots of people were mocking him to us at 25, moving back to 31 picking up a 4th & 5th rounder takes the sting out of spending another 1st rounder on a CB. There are a lot of really interesting players still available, so I could very easily see the Vikings try to move up again and try to secure another starter. With 14 picks and a boatload of needs, the roster is going to look very different. Will be interesting to see if they can pull of their on the fly reload like Seattle did.

Vikings selected TCU CB Jeff Gladney with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.A four-year starter at TCU, Gladney (5’10/191) earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2018 after allowing an elite 4.7 yards per target before taking a step back in his final season (7.2 yards per target) as a perceived one-year wonder. An instinctual player with plus athleticism — according to the Horned Frogs' training staff, Gladney squats 620 pounds, benches 400, and hang cleans 400-plus — he made a career in shadowing a majority of the nation's top wideouts as one of only two FBS players with at least 15 passes defended in each of the last two seasons. Still, the red flags are there: He'll be 23 on draft night, tore his ACL and LCL in his senior year of high school, underwent meniscus surgery this past offseason, and was scratched from the 2020 Senior Bowl due to a sore knee. He also disappointed at Indy's combine, running a 4.48 40 (he clocked at 4.34 last offseason) and sluggish 7.26 three-cone (13th-percentile) in front of league execs. Gladney may be forced into a sub-package role at the next level given his size, but he has the tracking skills and traits to eventually man the perimeter as a No. 2.

New #Vikings CB Jeff Gladney on decision to run 40 (4.48) at the combine on a torn meniscus: "I was just trying to get myself saw by all the teams to let them know how much it meant to me. ... I'm tough like that."
