Panthers signed RB Christian McCaffrey to a four-year contract extension through 2024. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $16 million per year, making McCaffrey the highest-paid running back in NFL history. It was an inauspicious time for CMC's contract to come due after a recent spate of running back deal mega-busts, but McCaffrey is no ordinary runner, and he is still two months shy of his 24th birthday. That combination of youth and unique skill-set always made McCaffrey more likely to get paid than most. It is surprising the deal was finalized at this moment in time, but the Panthers clearly wanted to make a commitment to their offensive engine as they embark on a reset. McCaffrey is coming off a campaign where he became just the third player in NFL history to reach 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season. He has averaged 4.7 yards per carry and 8.3 yards per reception for his career. Especially considering the absurd amount of passes he catches for a running back, that second number is extra impressive. Even with Cam Newton out and Teddy Bridgewater in, CMC has the strongest claim to No. 1 overall status in 2020.

A profoundly stupid contract...franchise tag value for RBs was $10.2 million...

Bye, Dalvin...

I like Cook, but I don't think he's worth that money (especially for a RB). CMC is a top 3 back imo, also.

the availability of RBs coupled with the lack of huge drop off from the best to the next tier down has me questioning paying any of them over about 9 million a year.

First off, Cook isn't as good as McCaffrey.  He has the potential to be, but he just isn't as of yet.  That said, someone will pay Cook too much.  That McCaffrey contract is too much for any RB.  I'd consider tagging him for a one year rental, but I can't commit to something close to that large.  $8M feels tolerable to me.  If we get to $10M, I'd rather just spend that money elsewhere.

Dont throw tomatoes and you can call me crazy. But with the cap increasing as it will, I think they (The Vikings) would go up to 12mm with incentives. I'm sure Dalvin is smiling today, no doubt.

will it?  what will all this virus stuff do to the profitability of the league for a year or two?  I wouldnt be over paying anybody based on the cap going up until we know how this thing resets the leagues revenues.

Cook is nowhere close to CMC.

CMC played over 90% of the snaps with over 100+ catches the last two yrs. He had 70% snaps and 80 catches his first y.

Cook has not played over 53% of the snaps ever and had his 53 catches last yr which were his most.

I mean, it is not even close.

I can't imagine this deal will be all that bad once the detail come in. Like all contracts, that is what will matter. There is no way the Panthers could make this deal now unless it benefited them greatly in one of two ways. 1) the guarantees only run through 2021 (which was the case now). Or 2) They get a significant discount on his 5th year option, which I think is less likely.

After you factor some of the signing bonus in this is likely going to be a 2.5 year deal with team options in 2023-2025. Its what the Rams attempted with Gurley.. get out of the guaranteed money while the player is still younger. Issue is you can't predict an arthritic knee. If not for that they deal he signed would have been rather beneficial long-term.

Christian McCaffrey is two players. He’s both a RB and a WO. Cook is a great back, but he’s nowhere near CMC.

If Cook demands $16 million, I’d honestly consider trading him. Of course I don’t think anyone else would be offering up that bounty either. There’s no way the team can pay that kind of money at that position. Or even close to it realistically. I’ve gotta think Guru is right and it’s the usual type of inflated contract.

McCaffrey has been insanely productive and most importantly, healthy.  Cook has been productive when healthy  but not at McCaffrey's level.

Adrian Peterson's extension in 2011 was way ahead of it's time.

Definitely some devil in the details now that they're in.

It comes out to be a 3 year deal with team options for 2023-2025. They also got a proration shell year in 2025 to decrease the 2023 & 2024 cap hits if they keep him. The new deal trumps his 5th year option but he gets more cash this year. But in 2021 on what would have been his 5th year option the Panthers save about $2M in cash.

People will dispute paying RB's, but this is a very strong contract for the Panthers that adds money to McCaffrey's durable years while allowing them outs if he declines with age.
