BREAKING: Mike McCarthy new head coach of the Cowboys
Yikes! I was hoping they passed on him. :) Lets hope he finds a way to screw up Zeke. McCarthy and a good running back/game is major trouble
I wonder if they have to get security to take Jason out.
Good move. It will be interesting to see how he does without Qbs named Favre and Rodgers on his roster.
125 wins in 13 years, 9 playoff appearances, a Lombardi, two first ballot HOF QBs...and a fractured relationship with his last QB.
He comes into a near ideal situation. Weak division, strong roster...on the downside you've got Jerruah and two key pieces not under contract...
Good move for Jerruh even if it did take him a week to Garrett the door.
Cowboys hired ex-Packers coach Mike McCarthy as head coach.Dallas dragged its feet on firing Jason Garrett, waiting until Sunday afternoon to announce his dismissal as head coach. The Cowboys also checked in with ex-Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, though obviously McCarthy made a strong impression during his interview last week. Prior to joining Dallas, McCarthy had also interviewed for head-coaching vacancies in Carolina, Cleveland and New York. The Packers were a perennial contender under McCarthy, who rode Aaron Rodgers to a Super Bowl victory in 2010. He's not the flashiest candidate the Cowboys could have chosen, though obviously the 56-year-old's experience and Super Bowl pedigree made him a relatively safe hire.SOURCE: Jay Glazer on TwitterJan 6, 2020, 10:05 AM ET
I think this is a smart hire. McCarthy was a good coach for a long time in Green Bay... his relationship with Rodgers deteriorated over the years and likely played a big part in why he was fired mid-season. He'll get a chance to coach a talented team again in a weak division... I could see him having some success right away. I'm surprised the Browns didn't take a longer look at him... he would have been a good fit there as well.
Guess I'm in the minority, but I don't think McCarthy is a great coach.
He's a safer choice for Dallas than other candidates, but he doesn't scare me at all. I do not see him as being a guy that will take Dallas to the next level. We'll see.
Side note- didn't this guy get booted out of a high school basketball game or something last year for being hammered? Maybe he WILL be a good fit haha...
The knock on McCarthy here in Cheezeland is that he wasn't a good in-game manager...slow to make changes and often scorned for his clock management. Plus many felt he gave in way too much to Rodgers and failed to develop a balanced attack the Puke use today.
But he wont give Jurrah any back talk.
Always felt he was a good coach, but Jerry will fix that!
Wait, I thought Rodgers was the HC in Green Bay. or was it GM, I forget

I think he will miss having the officiating crew on his roster even more.
Happy the Cowboys signed him (hate the Cowboys) because McCarthy is average at best!

There are so many interesting takes on this hire. Guess we'll see how it goes. McCarthy won't demand the extra power which is a plus for Jerry. Jones will still be front and center because that is the way he is.
McCarthy's offenses got stale...
I'm on the fence with the guy. He was blessed with two HOF caliber QB's. When they didnt play? His record was probably closer to .500
He has one hell of a roster in Dallas that has under-performed. If he brings on some progressive coordinators? They should be a force in the NFC next year.

Looks like they are keeping Kellen Moore. He can be their George Edwards equivalent.
