Is Kirk Worthy of Top 5,10,15 QB Money
now before we start the excuse making of top money now only works out to be average money by the end of the deal... F that noise, because top money right now is what kills our cap now and really we dont want to try and win in 2 or 3 years because the talent pool will only get shallower if we keep hanging around and picking in the low to mid 20s and burning a draft pick here or there on desperate attempts to fill what is a perceived area of weakness.
I am going to argue that if we keep KC, he needs to help create the cap space to put the necessary talent in front of him to help him succeed. A QBs value shouldnt be set on other QBs contracts, it should be set on how much talent ( cost of talent) has to be spent on his protection and his skill players to make him look like a top tier talent. Sure every QB has their moments where they look all pro, and those where they look like dog shit, but I think we can all agree that KC is showing like a top 10 to 12 guy, but certainly not a top 5 guy and to get this team to be competitive against top 5 teams we are going to really invest in our OL as well as DTs ( lets talk DB and LB salaries in our next installment )
IMO we do need to talk to KC now about his next deal, but its not because we want to extend him, its because we need to understand now what his expectations are going to be and see if he understands that the teams success could very well hinge on his greed.
If he is content to stay in the 28 million range, then we can use that extra cap on better OL talent and not really be pushed as hard to draft QB early this year, but if he is wanting 30+ then I say draft a QB early this year and be ready to part ways with KC after next season. No guarantees that a new QB will be better, but we know what we are going to have unless we invest more in the OL and the cap just isnt going to be able to carry that, and also the more high picks or high FA contracts that we keep investing in OL will weaken other areas that need an infusion of better talent/money as well.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?
Probably worth top 10 money. Not exactly sure why some of you think we’re going to be lucky enough to draft the next Wilson or whimever is availible when we pick.
No, if he can’t win in prime time or against quality opponents, especially division opponents, why bother? It’s time to stop the toilet from swirlin’...

However with Kirk and the talent he does have we will be drafting lower 1/3 of each round making it more difficult to find those quality players that will quickly fit and fill our needs.
I think we are similar to the AD era, he made us competitive enough to not get high draft picks, but not good enough to really contend.
Personally instead of resting players Sunday I might want to try and see what an OL juggle would look like. Give Oneill some snaps at LT, Reiff, at LG. I want to know how far off we really are from a dominant OL in terms of players. Or instead of Reiff, how about Collins at LG? Or RT? They need to try something different before next year. Even if they lost a little athleticism for size and strength, I think we would see an improvement in the middle of the line in pass pro and short yardage runs.

Everyone keeps talking about all this talent Kirk has and how he’s lowering their play. We have all kinds of low picks on offense. What if Kirk is raising them up and they playing above what they would without him?Not saying it for sure this way but will Dalvin be dalvin without the pass over the top? Will Bisi be Bisi? Mattison? The list goes on.
It took Brees years to be worth a damn. Peyton didnt win the big one till late in his carrer.
Im all about looking at our options but Kirk has been better then anything weve had for a decade. Lets be sure to not throw him away to easily.
I don't know what to think anymore. I really don't. Here's what I know: same ol' shit as always.
There are 4 or 5 elite QB's for 32 teams.
If GB gets another one after Rogers? I may turn in the fan-card for good. Thank your football god Chi screwed the pooch passing on Mahomes and Jackson.
Vikings are going to need to do three things, its simple, but hard and has been discussed here already by the smarter heads on the board:
- Draft a QB who has potential to learn and grow over a few seasons. Hopefully someone with some athleticisim
- Re-sign Cousins to a friendlier team deal
- Double-down on OL (especially left side)

This is what I want as well. As you mention, athleticism has to be higher up on the 'want' list as the game has evolved. The kid can sit and learn pressure-free.

Been talked about...Rick doesn't have a clue about QB's or building OL.
Time for change.
In a perfect world, Cousins would put winning over another record deal...He's got more money than he'll ever need...

The sit and learn pressure free thing is kinda bullshit though. They might learn some things but every year theyre not QBing is another year we’re not getting the benifit of the low salary.

I can understand that, but its not like he's going to start. Cousins is going to start, at least one more year, probably more with a new contract. It ain't bullshit if you can afford the luxury of having a QB sit for awhile. Most teams that take them high can't or at least not for very long. Minnesota won't be taking a guy high, he'll be more than likely round 3-5. I guess if the right kid fell, round 2 but doubtful. Much less pressure when a guy isn't taken in round 1.
Can they get a "No MNF Games" guarantee in that contract? If so, maybe.
Until Monday night I was feeling better about Cousins than I have since he got here, but he proved again that he plays his absolute worst when the lights are brightest, so in no way would I pay him top dollar after next year. And I know I sound like a broken record, but they need to draft a QB or two every goddamn year until they finally hit on a long-term franchise QB for once in my lifetime.
Once again, the QB cupboard is completely bare behind an aging, expensive FA veteran QB.
No matter what they do with Cousins, they absolutely have to get a young QB or two with potential behind him. I was really hoping they had that finally with Sloter, but I guess Mannion and his wealth of experience and career QB rating of 66.4 was just too valuable to let go (insert huge eye roll here).

To what end if you reup Cousins and lets say you do draft the next Wilson. Will you ever know? Or will it be like garapolo (lol sp??) where you study him up just to trade him away with an even older aging veteran who could quit at any time?

Drafting QBs should be something Minnesota does anyway regardless. Like I said, doesn't have to be a top 15 pick in round 1. Some teams do it way more regularly than others. Cousins has been an Ironman that way since he's been in Minnesota as far as starting every game. Drafting QBs is so difficult and the strike out factor is high. Keep swinging. Or in Minnesota's case, take a damn swing for once.
Against good teams, or in prime time, Cousins looks & plays like the 4th rounder he was...
it seems we’re trying to race Ferrari’s w/ an old conversion van!
