Vikings’ next task? Slowing a Bears offense that dropped 59 points in Week 1

The Vikings are 1-0 after rallying to beat the Packers on Sunday in stunning fashion. That’s the good news. A win is a win in the NFL, especially against a division rival.

The bad news — or at least reason not to get carried away with one win — is that there are still a lot of questions to be asked about this Vikings team coming out of the first game of the season.

With Kyler Murray getting concussed in the opener, it’s currently unclear who will be playing quarterback next week. Minnesota’s new run game wasn’t very effective against the Packers, there are real concerns with a couple interior offensive linemen, and the secondary allowed Green Bay receivers to run wide open on far too many occasions.

“Lot to correct, watching the tape today,” Kevin O’Connell said on Monday. “Some good things, good enough to win a football game, but long from where we wanna be as a team.”

Early Week 2 preview

The Vikings are going to be tested in extreme fashion this upcoming Sunday. Next up on their schedule is a trip to Chicago’s Soldier Field to take on the Bears, who just dropped nearly 60 points in a 59-37 win over the Panthers to begin their season.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson has not been shy about his desire to set NFL scoring records this year. His team is off to a pretty good start in that pursuit. Sunday marked just the tenth time this century that a team has scored at least 59 points in a game. The Bears racked up 552 yards of offense (291 rushing, 261 passing), averaging 7.9 yards per play. The Panthers had no answer for Caleb Williams and D’Andre Swift.

The Bears will almost certainly get more resistance from the Vikings (No. 2 in defensive EPA per play from 2024-25) than they did from the Panthers (No. 28). But Minnesota has a lot to clean up on the back end after allowing Jordan Love to complete passes of 81, 43, 42, 32, and 30 yards on Sunday.

The matchup between Johnson’s explosive offense and Brian Flores’ unique defense is going to be must-see television. Love, who the Vikings just faced, is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL against the blitz, but Flores brought at least five pass rushers on almost every dropback anyways. Williams is another guy who has been great against blitzes; he can either get the ball out quickly or extend plays with his athleticism.

There was a lot to like about what the Vikings got from front-seven players like Dallas Turner, Andrew Van Ginkel, Blake Cashman, Jalen Redmond, and Levi Drake Rodriguez against the Packers. There’s also a lot that has to be fixed — and quickly — involving Josh Metellus, Theo Jackson, Byron Murphy Jr., and others from a coverage standpoint.

Since Flores arrived in Minnesota, he has struggled against Johnson perhaps more than any other offensive coach. In the 2023 and ’24 seasons, when Johnson was still the Lions’ offensive coordinator, Detroit went 4-0 against the Vikings. They put up at least 30 points and 380 yards in each of those games. Johnson’s Bears averaged only 21.5 points in a series split with the Vikings last year, but they did cross the 300-yard mark both times.

In those Vikings-Lions matchups, it often seemed to easy for Jared Goff to find Amon-Ra St. Brown or another receiver open in a void of space, especially over the middle of the field. That’s how it felt for much of Sunday’s game, too. If Flores is going to continue to blitz like a madman — and there’s no reason to think otherwise — the Vikings need to have better answers and execution in the secondary to avoid giving up so many chunk gains through the air.

The Bears are going to be a fascinating team this year because for as great as their offense looks, their defense might be equally bad. They let Bryce Young and the Panthers rack up 478 total yards and 7.7 yards per play. It was a 31-31 game in the third quarter before Chicago pulled away.

So the Vikings should be able to put up points on the Bears this weekend, even if Carson Wentz starts at quarterback. But it might be a lot to ask of Wentz to win a shootout against Williams and company. It feels like the onus is going to be on the Vikings’ defense to get enough stops or takeaways that the offense doesn’t have to be perfect.

This should be another fun one between division rivals. Sole possession of first place in the North will be on the line if the Lions lose in Buffalo on Thursday night.

Excited to be 1-0, especially taking down GB. But Carson Wentz isn't going to cut it at QB. Carson got bailed out of some really bad throws by penalties on the D. Chicago is a dynamic team and we'll need to score some points. This isn't last year, every year is new and different. Chicago is better. I'd like to see Murray out there, but caution tells me he'll sit this weekend even if deemed ready to go. I mean, we need to see what we have in K1, good or bad.

Bears Line Opens at -5.5 in Week 2 vs. Vikings, But Should it Be So High?

Should the Bears be such a big favorite against the Vikings?

The Bears have opened up as a one-score (-5.5 at publication) favorite against the Vikings in Week 2, according to Draft Kings. Minnesota makes its way to Soldier Field for its second NFC North Division matchup.

Chicago will be playing its first divisional game of the season against a Vikings team coming off a 39-22 win over the Packers. The Bears are coming off a 59-37 win over the Panthers on the road.

Are the oddsmakers overvaluing the Bears? Is Minnesota not being given a proper chance after figuring out in Week 1 that Carson Wentz is their best quarterback option after Kyler Murray was injured in the first quarter?

Bears Defense Gives Reason For Concern

Many are focused on how porous Carolina's defense was. Still, before Chicago's offense broke the game open with 28 unanswered points, it was a 31-31 game in the third quarter.

Veterans Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson were some of the biggest offenders in the passing game. Johnson gave up 127 receiving yards, while Stevenson was smoked on a go route by Jaylen Coker for a 51-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Young.

Dennis Allen called blitzes on 42% of the Panthers' passing plays. Without much pressure generated, Young was able to find Coker and Tetairoa McMillan in mismatches downfield.

Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson should be able to do similar damage if Wentz is given time. The Bears' pass rush didn't inspire much confidence against Young, turning 22 pressures into just two sacks.

That lack of finishing ability doesn't bode well when juxtaposed against the secondary's struggles.

Caleb Williams May Have Enough to Power Bears Offense Anyway

Williams (two), D'Andre Swift (three), and Kyle Monangai (one) forced Carolina's defense to give up the most rushing touchdowns in a single game in franchise history. Chicago's 291 yards on the ground were the second-most ever given up in a single game in Panthers franchise history.

The Bears were historically dominant in Week 1. While the Vikings' 90.6% pass rush win rate against Green Bay's offensive line was elite, their secondary allowed 387 passing yards to Jordan Love and the Packers' receiving corps.

Williams was pressured on just 16.1% of his dropbacks, which was the worst number in the league on Carolina's part. The third-year quarterback was too elusive during the 32-point win.

Minnesota's pass rush could give him more troubles in Week 2, but the unpredictability of a dominant run game and a mobile quarterback means the Vikings are behind the 8-ball in their first road matchup of the year.

Verdict: Bears are a sensible -5.5 favorite

NFC NORTH: Where all four teams stand heading into Week 2

Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books as the four teams in the NFC North began their pursuit of a division title. Detroit outlasted New Orleans in an overtime thriller, Chicago's offense looked impressive in a big win over Carolina and Minnesota got a terrific performance from backup quarterback Carson Wentz in a come-from-behind division win over Green Bay.

Let's break down everything that happened within the NFC North in Week 1.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Week 1 result: Minnesota 39, Green Bay 22

Next opponent: at Chicago (1-0), Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. (FOX)

3 observations:

1. Blitzing onslaught

Minnesota blitzed Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love on 78.3 percent of his dropbacks, according to Next Gen Stats and the Vikings' team website. It was the fourth-highest rate by a defense in a game since at least 2018. That's part of Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores' DNA as Minnesota led the NFL in blitz percentage at 44.3 last season. Love was sacked four times and threw a pick vs. the blitz in the second half alone.

2. Right choice at backup QB

Minnesota made veteran Carson Wentz their backup behind starter Kyler Murray to begin the season. That helped secure Minnesota a Week 1 victory after Murray left the game with a concussion and Wentz stepped in, completing 12-of-19 passes with three touchdowns and a 123.5 passer rating.

3. Little things lead to wins

The Vikings were out-gained nearly two-to-one by the Packers, but Minnesota still found a way to win. The Vikings won the turnover battle (2 to 1), were 4-for-4 in the red zone while the Packers were just 1-for-4, and were 8-for-15 on third down while Green Bay was just 3-for-12. The Packers were also 0-for-2 on fourth down.

Key stat: All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson has moved into a tie with Randy Moss for No. 2 in Vikings history for career catches (587) after catching eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Cris Carter is at the top of the list with 1,004 receptions.

Quotable: "Sometimes you've gotta fake it 'til you make it," Wentz, 33, told the Vikings' team website after the game. "But no, by the time I step in that huddle, I'm sitting here like, 'I've done this. I've done this before in a lot of different colors now … I'm confident in what I bring to the table.'

"I'm kind of the old guy in the huddle now. So that's what I'm called to do. That's why I'm here. That's why I believe the coaches believe in me to put me out there. So that's my job, that's my role."

Twentyman: Minnesota ended the game on a 29-0 run starting with just over two minutes left in third quarter led by Wentz to shock the Packers. What Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell must love about this Week 1 win is it was a complete team effort in all three phases. Those are the kinds of wins that can kickstart the season for a team and give them a ton of confidence. Next up is a date with the Bears in Chicago as the Vikings begin the season with two division opponents.

CHICAGO BEARS

Week 1 result: Chicago 59, Carolina 37

Next opponent: vs. Minnesota (1-0), Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. (FOX)

3 observations:

1. High-flying offense

Head coach Ben Johnson said before the season he wanted the highest-scoring offense in NFL history. Chicago's well on their way after putting up 59 points with 26 first downs and 552 yards of total offense against a good Panthers defense in Week 1.

2. Cleaning up penalties

The Bears had the seventh-most penalties in the NFL last season with 125. It was something Johnson talked about as a point of emphasis heading into the season. Chicago had 12 penalties in the opener. The Bears lost only 57 yards on their 12 penalties, but it is still something to address moving forward.

3. Caleb Williams' great start

Chicago set a franchise record for points in a season opener with quarterback Caleb Williams as the catalyst behind the performance. He generated 334 total yards (269 passing and 65 rushing) and four touchdowns (two passing and two rushing) with a 124.1 passer rating.

Key stat: Running backs D'Andre Swift (124) and Kyle Monangai (100) each ran for 100 yards, marking the first time since 1980 and only the eighth time in NFL history that a team had two players rushing for at least 100 yards in their season opener, according to the Bears' team website.

Quotable: "This is going to be kind of our worst game," Williams told Yahoo Sports after the win. "I know points don't necessarily show that, but execution, the blocking, the penalties, all these different things."

Twentyman: It was a terrific offensive performance Sunday for Chicago, but there are still some questions on defense. The Bears allowed 37 points, 478 total yards of offense and 361 passing yards to a Carolina team that scored the sixth-fewest points in the NFL last season. It's just one performance, but division foe Minnesota is next up and the Vikings are fresh off their 39-point outing against Green Bay.

DETROIT LIONS

Week 1 result: Detroit 31, New Orleans 30 (OT)

Next opponent: at Buffalo (1-0), Thursday, Sept. 17 at 8:15 p.m. (Prime Video)

3 observations:

1. Jahmyr Gibbs handles the load

Gibbs rushed a career-high 29 times for 156 yards (5.4 avg.) and two touchdowns and caught five passes for another 30 yards. That's a high workload, but Gibbs said after the game he felt good and could have carried it 40 times, if needed.

2. Secondary concerns persist

There were a lot of question marks entering the season regarding Detroit's secondary with safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch starting the season on IR. Those concerns remain after Saints second-year quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards and three touchdowns while leading five second-half scoring drives.

3. Aidan Hutchinson could challenge sack record

Coming off the most dominant training camp of his career, Hutchinson opened the season with 2.0 sacks, four quarterback hits and 10 total pressures for the Lions' defense. Myles Garrett set the single-season sack record at 23.0 last season. If Hutchinson plays all season the way he did Sunday, he could certainly challenge that mark by season's end.

Key stat: Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown notched 10 catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns Sunday. It was his 12th career game with 10-or-more catches, tying Anquan Boldin, Brandon Marshall, Julio Jones and CeeDee Lamb for the third-most 10-catch games through six-career seasons in NFL history.

Quotable: "The most important thing is find a way to win and you're going to have some areas you're going to have to clean up, you're going to have to correct and you got to correct them in a hurry," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said. " And that's the most important thing."

Twentyman: It's hard to win in this league, and teams should never apologize for a win. Campbell and the Lions certainly won't. There are things to correct but it's easier to clean those things up coming off a win. Campbell and the Lions will look at the film Monday and address the corrections before quickly moving on to Buffalo. The Bills welcome Detroit into the opening of their new stadium on Thursday Night Football.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Week 1 result: Minnesota 39, Green Bay 22

Next opponent: at New York Jets (1-0), Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. (FOX)

3 observations:

1. One play flips momentum

Leading 22-17 and facing a 4th & 6 at the Minnesota 22-yard line early in the fourth quarter, the Packers kicked a 40-yard field goal. An offside penalty on the Vikings prompted head coach Matt LaFleur to take the points off the board and go for it on 4th & 1. When Love's sneak attempt was stopped, the rest of the game from that point was all Minnesota.

2. Penalties big factor in outcome

Green Bay was flagged 12 times for 98 yards compared to just three penalties for 15 yards for the Vikings. Minnesota's go-ahead touchdown drive after the fourth-down stop was a great example of the impact those penalties had on the final outcome. An illegal contact penalty nullified a sack, a roughing the passer gave the Vikings 15 free yards and a defensive holding nullified a Packers interception in the end zone.

3. Packers missed Josh Jacobs

Green Bay's star running back remains on the Commissioner's Exempt List and without him, the Packers amassed just 66 total yards on the ground on 21 attempts (3.1 avg.) with zero touchdowns.

Key stat: Green Bay allowed 22 total pressures by the Vikings' defense with four different players allowing at least three pressures.

Quotable: "It's get back to work," LaFleur told the Packers' team website. "It's (time) to be critical of the tape. … We've got to rebound. We've got to pick up the pieces."

Twentyman: Green Bay let one slip away on the road within the division and those hurt. Penalties, missed assignments and the inability to neutralize Minnesota's heavy blitz scheme all factored into the loss. The Packers are on the road Week 2 in New York to face a 1-0 Jets team.

This might be one of those games where KOC has to fight off his inner demons. Common sense says you run the ball and keep it away from Caleb Williams as much as possible, but Bryce Young threw for 361 yards and 3 TDs against this defense in that pinball game Sunday.

It's going to be tough to win in Chicago's home opener without our starting QB, but I feel pretty good that the Bears are not going to put up 59 points against Brian Flores.

I think ... Ben Johnson is Brian Flores' kryptonite

Two heinous crimes were committed Sunday by two of football nerddom's favorite coaches.

Let's start with Johnson. The Bears scored 59 points against the Panthers, which is like if you scored 50 points, and then decided to score nine more points. Both running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai reached 100 yards and scored two touchdowns, and quarterback Caleb Williams added another two scores on scrambles of his own. And for those tracking Williams' accuracy metrics: 72.4% completion percentage with an off-target rate of only 13.8%.

Everything worked for the Bears' offense, which barely left first gear against the Panthers. The Bears will face far stiffer competition in Week 2 against the Vikings and Flores, who rendered an unbelievable performance against the Packers in Week 1.

The Vikings blitzed Jordan Love on 73.8% of his dropbacks Sunday -- the highest rate at which any quarterback has been blitzed since the 2023 season. The Packers were in a difficult position entering the game; starting left guard Aaron Banks was hurt, and the camp campaign to build up Anthony Belton at the starting right guard spot was abandoned late in the process. The Packers fielded 2024 fifth-round pick Jacob Monk at right guard and 2024 undrafted free agent Donovan Jennings at left guard. It was Jennings' first career start and Monk's second.

In an effort to insulate the young guards, the Packers kept more players in to block than basically any offense over the past few seasons. Love had three or fewer receivers in the route concept on an astonishing 15 dropbacks. Only three quarterbacks have had more such dropbacks over the past five seasons.

Flores has little interest in occupying those routes with multiple defenders -- he'd rather throw bodies against the wall of your pass protection and find a weak point. Like water against a dam, it didn't really matter how many players the Packers kept in to protect -- if there was a weak point (which there often was), Flores had a rusher in that spot. His distinctive approach to early-down blitzing breaks the rules. It forces opposing offenses to play a different sport than the one for which they're prepared against other opponents.

But Johnson knows Flores well. He called offense against him as the coordinator of the Lions -- twice in 2023, twice in 2024 -- then picked up another two games in 2025 as the head coach of the Bears. Across six matchups, Johnson's team is 5-1 -- the only loss was last season's opener and Williams' first start in Johnson's offense. Over those six games, Johnson's offense doesn't look like a 59-point monster ... but it's clearly better than the average offense against the marauding Vikings coordinator.

Offenses vs. Flores' defense, 2023-26

So what does Johnson do that other teams can't replicate? A few things stick out. The first is communication. Flores' defense requires as much pre-snap coordination between 11 players as any in football -- that's why Harrison Smith is back and so valuable. He can be the coach on the field, changing the playcall after the defense sees the formation.

Johnson rises to meet Flores. His offense is as communication-heavy as any in the league, and his group is empowered to make adjustments based on what it sees. Flores wants to get opposing offenses stuck in a bad protection look or run call; Johnson's groups are elite at getting out of such sticky wickets. Williams' pre-snap command, which has reportedly taken big strides through Year 1 and into Year 2 with Johnson, will be tested here.

To challenge Flores' reliance on communication, Johnson will randomly snap the football quickly -- no motion, no checking. Immediate snaps. The Bears had 19 quick snaps against the Vikings in Week 11 -- snaps in which less than two seconds elapse between the line getting set and the ball being snapped. It was the most they had in any game last season, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Second most? The 17 such snaps in Week 1 ... also against Flores.

The second thing that sticks out is formational. The Lions loved condensed sets under Johnson, and the Bears have continued that approach. Condensed sets are typically a bad idea against blitz-heavy teams. When you spread out the field, it's easier to identify suspicious defensive alignment that reveals who's blitzing from where. Against Flores and the Vikings, there's no point in trying to riddle things out -- the blitzes are too frequent and too varied. You'll think you're right, you'll actually be wrong, and then you'll be dead in the water.

So Johnson turns into the skid. He gets as condensed as possible against Flores. In 2025, no offense had more condensed formations in any game than the Bears in Week 11 against the Vikings, with an average formational width of only 17.7 yards. Teeny tiny formations allow Johnson to throw the ball on out-breakers into a ton of space, to stress the Vikings' cornerbacks who are typically insulated by trap coverages and quick throws. It also allows Johnson to meet Flores' duplicity and disguise with the beautiful simplicity of the running game. With lighter players such as Joshua Metellus and Dallas Turner on the edge against double-teams from extra tight ends and condensed wide receivers, the Bears can grind out physical yardage and set up the play-action pass.

Does Flores have an answer to this approach? Yes ... but not on the chalkboard. The Vikings' first three picks in the 2026 draft were trench picks: defensive tackle Caleb Banks in the first round, on/off-ball linebacker hybrid Jake Golday in the second round and another defensive tackle in the third round in space-gobbler Domonique Orange. Any defense that plays in a division with the Bears needs to be serious about its run defense -- doubly true for Flores, who will never get to third-and-long against Chicago unless he has some run-stuffing hog mollies up front to slow down Swift and Monangai.

Johnson won Assistant Coach of the Year in 2024. Second place in voting was Flores.
