Brian Flores-Ben Johnson showdown takes center stage in Vikings-Bears Week 2 matchup

Two years ago, in the lead-up to one of these clashes, a reporter coaxed a smile out of then-Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

The reporter had asked about Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ blitz packages. How, the reporter wondered, did the relentless pressure tax players’ minds? Johnson, steely as ever, listened to the full question.

A grin formed.

“Yeah, um …” Johnson said before chuckling.

His initial reaction carried a tinge of mischief. It felt like the reaction of a poker shark at a hold ’em table. The type of response you’d have about an opponent you know is always up to something.

The reporter followed up on the initial question, citing a compliment from Flores about Johnson’s abilities. How flattering was that to hear?

“I think he’s trying to just butter us up a little bit,” Johnson said.

He smirked once more, another brief window into a vaunted back-and-forth that returns this weekend. Johnson is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears, and for the seventh time, these two foes will meet in a critical NFC North matchup.

Winning offers far more than just bragging rights. The victor will establish solid footing in a divisional race that’s likely to be decided down the stretch.

It simplifies the nuances of any matchup to pit two play callers against each other. This, though, is a special case. Johnson’s offense represents creativity and detail, born from a self-made coaching career. Flores’ defense embodies a trademark fearlessness. The Vikings don’t blitz because it’s flashy or because it produces eye-popping graphics. They send waves of bodies at offenses from all sides because that’s what they think is most likely to produce the right result.

Johnson has publicly stated his preference for points and blowouts. Flores makes no bones about his desire to apply a vise grip to opposing offenses. Neither settles for satisfaction. Both recognize the challenge the other presents.

“They do a great job,” Flores said Tuesday afternoon. “There’s shifts, there’s motions, there’s a lot of eye candy. They do everything that could potentially give a defense problems.”

He even offered a window into how his mind might work Sunday at Soldier Field. Employ one deep safety, and Chicago’s wideouts may feast against man-to-man coverage. Shift and feature two deep safeties, and the Bears could find susceptibilities in Minnesota’s ability to stop the run.

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Safety positioning matters, but so do protection rules and pre-snap signals and down-and-distance tendencies. Each coverage choice comes with a cost. Different run concepts open the door to holes. All avenues of communication matter because they could contain the key for either side to decipher the deception.

As former Vikings defensive lineman Harrison Phillips put it several years ago, playing Johnson is like navigating a volatile stock market. You enter with expectations, but every drive seems like a forecasting exercise. Does it make sense to sell off while ahead? Should Minnesota adjust schematically even if the team is succeeding? Or does it make sense to stick with the investment? Should Minnesota maintain its approach, betting against Chicago’s ability to find a quick answer?

The shared history only adds to the complexity of the decisions.

“Each week, you try to find a weakness in the armor and look to attack it,” Johnson said ahead of the highly anticipated Vikings-Lions bout in Week 18 of the 2024 season. “This defense doesn’t have much, and it’s been that way for two years now. You can tell that this whole unit has been together. They have the answers. They know how to respond when they get hit with something.”

Going back to Johnson and Flores’ first faceoffs in 2023, a visual breakdown of the quarter-by-quarter efficiency statistics looks like a round-by-round scoring of Hagler-Hearns. Throwing the uppercut is less important than being able to absorb one.

In the Week 7 confrontation between Johnson’s Lions and Flores’ Vikings in 2024, Minnesota limited Detroit to a minuscule 21.4 percent success rate in the first quarter. Detroit answered with a ridiculous 61.1 percent success rate in the second quarter. The Lions kept their momentum with a 54.5 percent success rate in the third quarter, but the Vikings eliminated the rhythm by holding them to a 27.8 percent success rate in the fourth.

Detroit won 31-29, but the lopsided blow-by-blow revealed the ingenuity of their staffs and players.

Both coaches worked with a collective to identify and solve problems on the fly. This takes sharp eyes from above, intricate sideline dialogue and shrewd on-field adaptation.

“Any type of offense that’s out there — ground and pound, run and shoot, RPO, 4 by 1 — he’s got it,” Flores said. “So what are we getting this week? It’s hard to know. A lot of the game is adjustments. If they do this, we want to do this. We’re going to have our own game plan, and it’s the same on his end with him asking, ‘What are they doing? How are we going to counteract it?’”

Last year against Flores, Johnson utilized condensed formations, quick snaps and third-down runs at a notable clip. Flores, meanwhile, kept his max-pressure calls to a minimum against Johnson. He also deployed mostly zone coverage out of heavier personnel to neutralize the Bears’ run-pass multiplicity.

Also like poker players, they understand the others’ preferences. They know what moves the other prefers to make on the field.

“It’s one of the things I love about coaching defense in this division in the NFC,” Flores said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

The Minnesota Vikings will head to Soldier Field this Sunday to face the Chicago Bears. It will be Minnesota's second divisional matchup of the season after beating the Green Bay Packers last week.

Although they have won their previous six matchups at Soldier Field, the stadium has historically been a house of horrors for the Vikings. Games get weird; in 2024, their matchup inexplicably went to overtime after the Bears scored 11 in the final 22-second stretch, and the Vikings won 30-27 in overtime. Last year, J.J. McCarthy came alive in the fourth quarter, leading Minnesota to a dramatic 27-24 come-from-behind win.

Several storylines surround the game as well, adding to the hype around the NFC North clash. They will help shape a game that could go a long way in determining who will be in the driver's seat in the division the rest of the season.

Storylines to watch between the Vikings and Bears in Week 2

Brian Flores vs Ben Johnson

The game within the game is the matchup between Brian Flores and Ben Johnson. Even though Johnson is only in his second season in Chicago, he and Flores have faced off twice a year since 2023. Back then, Johnson was serving as Detroit's offensive coordinator, while Flores was in his first year in Minnesota.

Johnson holds a 5-1 edge over Flores, although the Vikings' offense and special teams contributed more to their 19-17 loss at U.S. Bank Stadium last year. Minnesota held Caleb Williams to 37/67 passing for 403 yards and one touchdown in the air. Williams did manage six runs for 58 yards and a touchdown in last year's season opener at Soldier Field, but was limited to four carries for 26 yards in the rematch.

That's just one aspect of the Bears' offense, though. Chicago ran for 291 yards last week against the Panthers, with 65 of those coming from Williams, who added two rushing touchdowns. In the air, he went 21/27 for 261 yards and two touchdowns.

Justin Jefferson's historic milestone

Week 1 reminded the rest of the NFL that Justin Jefferson is still one of the best, if not the best, receivers in the league. He caught eight of the nine passes thrown his way for 92 yards and two touchdowns, even adding a two-point conversion. That matched his touchdown output from the 2025 season.

But Jefferson's next reception will be historic. He is currently tied with Randy Moss for the second-most receptions in Vikings history (587). With one catch, he will trail only Cris Carter, who still leads by a large margin with 1,004.

Jefferson likely put Chicago defensive coordinator Dennis Allen on notice. The Bears racked up 59 points in their Week 1 win, but their defense still allowed the Panthers to score 37 points. Will they be able to sell out to stop Jefferson, or will Chicago play their standard defense to avoid letting the likes of Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings, and T.J. Hockenson run rampant?

How much will the weather affect the game?

Sunday's game could bring inclement weather. As of Tuesday night, AccuWeather was forecasting 67 degrees and "cloudy and not as warm but humid, with a thunderstorm." The forecast called for 18 mph gusts, a 56% chance of precipitation, and a 34% chance of thunderstorms.

Special teams coordinator Matt Daniels was asked about potential weather effects, saying the Vikings' special teams will prepare by dunking footballs in water to simulate those conditions.

As anyone in the Midwest knows, the weather forecast can change a lot over five days. But we've seen severe weather affect games in Chicago before. That makes ball security a priority. In 2025, no one turned the ball over more than Minnesota (30), and no one had more takeaways than the Bears (33). That difference could be why Chicago, not the Vikings, made the playoffs last year.

He played well, IMO. But for all the good, you have to weigh that incredibly easy missed interception heavily when evaluating his overall game, especially since GB scored a few plays later.

If this is a critical game late in the season, in the playoffs, or in the Super Bowl, you have to make that play. Those are the kinds of missed opportunities that have defined far too many years of heartache for this franchise. We cannot afford to let that happen again, especially against the Bears this week.
