Misc. Thoughts: Lions
#1
  • Dorian Gray:  Is Xavier Cousins' Dorian gray picture.  The better Kirk C. plays, the worse Xavier R plays -- at least it feels that way to me.
  • Terrence Newman:  Newman was able to play until he was 38 because he used the technique Zimmer taught him -- even as he lost a step.  As Rhodes slows down, he seems to be reverting to his pre-Zimmer technique.  The Vikes need to bring in Newman to talk with Rhodes about how he was able to extend his career.
  • OLine:  Big kudos to this group and the coaches in pulling this group together into a cohesive unit.  They still have flaws but the coaches are putting them into winnable situations.  This is a really impressive coaching job.  The Vikings have allowed a grand total of three sacks and 16 pressures over the past three games (E Thompson tweet).  It is also amazing the the Vikings didn't have to use screens and draws to slow down the rush as play-action really held the dline.  Is the Cooks decoy the best part of the pass blocking?
  • Missed kick:  Imagine this -- a missed kick and no one cares (that much).  when it happened, it didn't feel like the end-of-the-world like missed kicks in the past.
  • Cousins' TD passed to Thielen.  I think the last two touchdown passes by Cousins to Thielen have been as well-thrown passes as I can recall in the past few years.
  • Hurry Up Offense:  I do wonder what happened to the first quarter hurry up offense used a couple of games ago.

Honestly I think most are over-reacting to Rhodes's performance.

Oline has been doing great, but Philly and Detroit aren't at the top end of the charts in defensive pressure.  That said, I think the offense play calling is a huge help to the o-line.

I knew he was going to miss that.  There was pressure coming off the right edge and I think Bailey hurried the kick.

Re XR: the PI was his worst play, not the TDs he gave up. Those were really good plays by Stafford and nice catches. Tough to cover a really good receiver and prevent him from catching even a 2-yard pass from a strong-armed accurate QB.
Agree on the O-line. They have been great in pass protection.  Philly can rush the passer.  And Detroit was getting pressure on Wentz rushing just 3.  Give the O line credit. Giants are a different story.
Of course Bailey was going to miss that kick, it came after Diggs dropped a TD pass. Cannot count on Bailey.  ...
And I don't want to hear any more bitching from Diggs about getting traded.  Last week a ball bounces off his helmet for an interception.  He has fumbled twice lately - thankfully we recovered his Detroit fumble - and just dropped a TD pass.  Everyone gets to make mistakes, but not so much if you are going to bitch about someone else's.  Fortunately, he is making so many plays that his mistakes are not costing us games.

Other than against the jets rookie QB, the Eagles haven't had many sacks.  They have some good players, but haven't been getting much in the way of sacks.  Detroit isn't very good in that department either.

Detroit is 27th in the NFL with 10 sacks.  Eagles are at 16th with 17 sacks, 10 in one game against the Jets.
