"So how did the freshwater get there? The researchers theorize the fresh water in the aquifer was ice that melted after the last ice age and got trapped in sediment that was rocky. They also think that the aquifer is being fed by underground runoff from the shore."
Glacial (due to global warming) melt and runoff from development, lol.  (Thought those were bad things?)

There was a famous bet in 1980, between Julian Simon (business professor) and Paul Ehrlich (biologist).

I think Simon is lol'ing from his grave.  Didn't even consider water in the bet.

This story only gets better if geologists discover that Pennsylvania underground oil- fracking helped.

I shouldn't get greedy, but I can dream.   Smile

Of course the Earth still has fresh water. She just had to hide it from us real good.

Well Savannah , if  you combine both. You got your water and all the sand you need down there. Get fracking.

Ah fracking. The Jed Clampett school of oil collecting.

" then one day he was shootin' at some food and up through the ground came a bubblin' crude"

Just fire a shot gun in the ground till ya hit sumptin'

well, I did post it in the "sensitive" section.

Virtually every topic is 'political', by definition.
Doesn't mean it has to turn partisan-ugly.

As my Wiki link pointed out, there was a somewhat famous bet back in the 80's.

Basically:
Ehrlich bet on the finite nature of resources guaranteeing to causing societal turmoil.
Simon bet on another resource: the ingenuity of the human mind to mitigate/overcome.

Twas an interesting bet & discussion (imo).... and the news of the new huge aquifer would bolster
Simon's bet.

We'll see. I think the winner will be decided in the future.
Simon's would be right if we could utilize this find.
If Florida turns into a sink hole and the sea water rushes in forming the largest brackish water aquifer. I'm voting Ehrlink.

Sounds alot like Pascal's Wager.

Also, it's the same thing that every doomsday cult leader has said when they predict that the world will end on "X" day.  Funny thing though: it hasn't happened yet... and all their "prophecies" now look foolish.  Or, they could just go the route of Jehovah's Witnesses and pretend that the prediction never happened.

I wonder if any any of the folks making "climate" predictions have ever done the same thing?   :p

can it really be "fresh" if it has been there since the last ice age?
