Rick Spielman confirms contract talks with Nick Easton
#1
Nick Easton is not a name on a lot of people's radar as a perceived upgrade to the Minnesota Vikings offensive line, but it certainly sounds like the team may feel that way. Amid rumors and reports that the Vikings are looking to re-sign the offensive guard, who missed all of last year with a neck injury, general manager Rick Spielman told members of the Twin Cities media on Thursday that the team is talking to his camp to bring him back for 2019.

Here is what Spielman had to say about what he brings to the table as a football player.
"One of Nick’s traits is he’s a good athlete. He’s tenacious as a football player," Spielman said. "He’s coming off a pretty significant injury. I won’t talk about where he is medically. But his physical traits that we look for fit very well from a schematic standpoint than maybe some of the other people that we looked at in free agency. Where you make your mistakes, and where I’ve made mistakes is sometimes forcing something that may be a name player, but making sure that if you’re going to ask him to do outside zone blocking and he’s a gap scheme-guy and better going [forward] than [to the side], he’s going to fail doing this, but if he goes into another scheme that’s going straight ahead, that’s probably where he’s going to have his most success and have his best chance to play to his contract."
Easton and center Pat Elflein formed a solid duo at guard and center in 2017 and the team liked how he had progressed as a player, so it is a shame we never got to see that build on the field in 2018. As of now, Easton would have to be considered a body inside to compete for time and take pressure off of having to draft several offensive linemen early in lieu of other players at positions of need in the 2019 NFL Draft. There may be worse options out there if they are looking to address this on a budget this offseason.

Starting line before the draft if they get Easton ...
Reiff, Easton, Eflein, Collins/Isidora,O'Neill.
FANTASTIC!
Heh, but at least Zimmer got to keep all his toys.
The ones that fold in the most important games of the year.
Say what you want but the last thing I remember is the Bears without their top WR running all over the Vikings in a WIN OR GO HOME game.
The offense struggled for sure but they were always going to struggle vs the Bears due to the craptacular play on the interior line.  Anyone thinking the offense would have done much better than the first game was delusional at best.
This "vaunted high ranked" defense is full of CHOKERS really.
In the last two games of the last two years they got their arses handed to them.
When it is money time, don't bet on them.
This is a direct reflection on Zimmer too.
I love Zimmer but when his defense does not give their best performance when you need it most, well, ...

He's a pretty good pass blocker. That's something we didn't have at guard last year. He did well against Donald when he played against him in '17. Don't know if he is a scheme fit, but he is better than Compton and Remmers, as well as capable of sliding over to center, if Elf gets hurt again or doesn't produce.

This whole oline thing sucks. We got Barr but we missed out on legit starters on the Oline.

Well, gee whizz, if Ricky thinks he's a great OL, why would ANYONE question his opinion?

It's not as if he has an atrocious, well documented history of ineptitude in putting together a decent Offensive Line, correct? Or building a team incapable of winning more than 1 playoff game every 6 years, right?

Oh wait a sec.........

Its very Zimmer that the first 3 moves in FA for Minnesota are defensive: Shamar, resigning Barr and restructuring Griffen. Why would I expect anything else?

When the O-line is made of chicken shit, there's no way to make it taste like chicken salad. I like Nick Easton at guard, hopefully they can resign him.

We do need him if for nothing more then we got nothing more. They will draft a couple as well. I hope... The Oline will eventually approach the average range. We've drafted one 1st round offensive lineman in the last 15 years. He turned out to be a bust. You get what you pay for.

Considering our cap problems, if we come out of free agency with having signed Barr, Stephen and Easton....and retain Rudolph, Waynes, and Griffen...I'll take that as a win.
