CP Thriving in NE...

Bill Belichick has found the right way to use Cordarrelle Patterson

In 2013, his rookie year, the Vikings handed off to their first-round receiver 12 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns. But things quickly went down hill with Norv Turner in charge of the offense and by 2015, Patterson couldn’t get on the field.

Pat Shurmur came close to finding the proper role for CP84. The current New York Giants head coach used quick screens to get Patterson in space and he set a career high with 52 receptions, but only gained 8.7 yards per catch and ran the ball just seven times for 43 yards.
The Vikings elected not to pick up Patterson’s fifth-year option and let him hit the market despite his online pleas to stay in Minnesota.
In Oakland, he put together a decent season with 430 yards from scrimmage on 44 touches, but again he was underutilized in the backfield despite averaging 9.3 yards per carry on 13 runs.
With five games remaining, Patterson is in line to set his career high in rushing yards and total touches. He’s fit into a deep group of Patriots weapons as a wildcard who can line up anywhere from X receiver to running back. He’s averaging 9.2 yards per catch on 13 reception and 4.2 yards per carry on 37 runs and is third on the team in total offensive touches.
“They’re doing really good with him,” Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said. “Everybody knew Cordarrelle was an outstanding athlete, strong runner, great when he had the ball in his hands. We probably could have done a better job when we had him, after watching them.”

When I first read this it kinda pissed me off. It can be annoying when fans think they know more than coaches, but sometimes I think they do. I know many on this board were frustrated by the Vikings refusal to give Patterson the ball. Guy had, what, 9 TDs his rookie season? Was hugely effective running the ball and on bubble screens...and then the Vikings just stopped using him that way. Fans everywhere were screaming at the team to give him the damn ball and the Vikings just...didn't. Maybe it was Norv. Probably. But, Zim, buddy, when you're in command, COMMAND.

I didn't get the impression that Zim wished CP was still with the team, or missed him.  CP is a great runner, but getting him the ball to utilize his skills was the trouble.  He's not a very good WR (even with Brady at QB), and he's not a very good RB either.  He's a gimmick play (jet sweep/screen play) or STs player only.

You can only throw so many bubble screens a game, and between Harvin and CP, it just seemed using those plays became predictable for defenses facing the Viking offense.

Now I suppose we're going to see CP go for 100 plus yards both running and receiving with 3 TDs on Sunday.  Sorry Longshippers. Confused

Zimsu is right, they should've/could've...But weren't they still struggling with a run-heavy/get AP the ball offense?

Not making excuses mind you...

Patterson is averaging 10.9 ypg receving and 14.2 ypg rushing.
And most of his rushes came in 2 games when they were
depleted at RB and needed another body.

I would hardly call this unlocking his potential or figuring
out how to use him.

The way the Patriots are using him is the same as the way
everyone else used him.

Agreed. You'd think the guy was burning down the house the way the media is losing their shit over him. This is why I know I'm not the target demo anymore for sports media and reporting: its all such hyperbolic garbage. The hype machine includes everyone in the sports media because its job justification. Its good for business to build them up and tear them down.

Patterson: 13 rec for 120 yds (9.2avg), 2 TDs
Treadwell: 29 rec for 266 yds (9.2 avg), 1 TD

And he is averaging a little over 3 carries/game with less yards per carry than Mike Boone.

Boy, the Patriots sure unleashed the beast!

What a complete horseshit article.

How does 2018 even threaten to eclipse 2013 as his best year? Only if you pretend he is a RB. All the Pats have done is turned a player who was in danger of being a total out-of-the-league washout into a serviceable part-time utility player. Good for them and for CP but it's easy when the pressure is off.
I think that, after his rookie season, someone within the Vikings organization declared, "OK, turn him into Julio Jones". Pretty soon he was in the doghouse because that wasn't working. Patriots didn't feel like they had to show they drafted an All-Pro WR late in the first round, so they accepted him for the limited player he is.
He's a UFA again after this season, that will show how much the Patriots and league value him. I think he'll get a utility player deal, about $2M per year.

It's the Patriots so automatically the narrative will be favorable.

Agreed.  Had to look at the stats and was wondering where the rest of them were.
