Vikings get a big assist from soon-to-be ex-Packers coach
#1
MINNEAPOLIS — If Mike McCarthy wasn’t already a lame duck coach before Sunday night, he sealed his fate in the third quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium and in doing so did the Minnesota Vikings a tremendous favor.
With the score tied at 14 and the Packers facing a fourth-and-1 at their own 44-yard line, McCarthy took a timeout and then made the baffling decision to go for it against Mike Zimmer’s defense. Certainly McCarthy was going to call a play that would feature future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers because that was the only thing that would make sense.

McCarthy couldn’t be so dumb as to simply have Rodgers hand the ball to Aaron Jones, have Jones go up the middle and hope for the best, right? That’s exactly what the play call ended up being and when Jones was stopped by safety Harrison Smith not only was the play over, so was the game.
Consider it an early Christmas (and parting) gift from the Packers coach. Minnesota’s defense might not be as good as it was a year ago, but running into the teeth of it is just plain stupid.

Jones averaged 4.3 yards a carry in that game, not sure it was that much of a stupid play....only in hindsight, of course. And to say that the 'game was over' after that play with the score tied 14-14 is just plain stupid. Hey, McCarthy has his warts for sure and he might not be back to coach Green Bay next season, but this was a bit of a reach article on one play. Green Bay had a horrible fumbled punt in the game that was WAY more damaging than this play.

and once again... jugg head proves that he is not qualified to be covering pro football.

I agree with Sticky,  this was hardly the dagger in that contest.... hell it wasnt even a nerf dart in terms of damage done to the packers that game.

After listening to one of the vikings analyst that watched the game film ( can't remember which one), the 4.3 yards per carry  was somewhat deceiving.  On a lot of those runs the packers were double teaming Richardson and Jones would start out running away from the double team only to cut back behind the double team and drive for 5 or 6 yards.  This would work if the Vikings were in a base defense, but on 4th and one there were 9 in the box which would allow Smith to break through and make the play as he did.  If a majority of Jones yards were from following the double team against a base defense then I can see how it was kind of a stupid call. I think the stupid thing on McCarthys part was to go for it on their own 44, not so much the call.  And no that call was in no way a dagger.

i dont think the call was bad,  to not audible out of it at the LOS with what the D was showing was the stupid part of that play.  if rogers is half the qb that his paycheck says he is there is no way in hell he should have snapped that ball with the play that was called.   as far as the way gbay got those 4.3 ypc by running behind a double team... why cant our offense do that?  I have to think even as weak as our OL looks that they should be able to double team a DT and our OTs should be able to kick the opposing DEs outside long enough to get our RB to the second level more often than not,  no?
