With Hunter under contract through 2023, Vikings turn attention to Barr, Diggs
#1
One down, two to go.
The Vikings wrapped up burgeoning defensive end Danielle Hunter through 2023 with a five-year extension worth $72 million. Now they turn their attention to linebacker Anthony Barr and receiver Stefon Diggs, and getting them deals that fit inside the NFL’s $178 million salary cap this season will be tricky.
“It’s not easy,” general manager Rick Spielman said, “but we’ll continue to work on it.”
The Vikings were one of the NFL’s best teams last season, advancing to the NFC Championship Game, and they’re trying to keep as much of the core together as possible. That includes Barr, the ninth overall pick in the 2014 draft who has played in the past three Pro Bowls, and Diggs, the 2015 fifth-round pick who did the lion’s share of the work on the Minnesota Miracle catch that beat New Orleans in the playoffs in January.
Spielman said Wednesday that he and executive vice president Rob Brzezinski, the team’s salary cap guru, “have been continuously talking with their agents.”
“We want to keep all of our guys, and we’ll try to see if there’s a way that we can do that,” he added. “Because those guys are very important and we’d love to get those guys locked up, as well.”
