Vikings rookie CB Mike Hughes caps strong spring with pick six
#1
Mike Hughes returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown last year with Central Florida. During practice with the Vikings on Thursday, he had one even longer.
Taken by the Vikings with the No. 30 pick in April’s draft, Hughes caught a ball that bounced off tight end Josiah Price and rambled down the field to the end zone on the final day of minicamp.
Hughes shrugged off the play. Still, it was a good way to cap off what was a strong spring for the rookie.
“I was pleased with him,” head coach Mike Zimmer said. “I thought he did a nice job. Still a learning experience for him. I thought the way he handled himself, the way he tried to learn and listen and all those things, I thought it was good.”

Zimmer recently praised Hughes on his KFAN interview as being the quickest learner on inside coverages he's ever been around...  High praise for the young rookie.

It would appear early that Hughes has real upside to play the slot. If Holton Hill continues to show ability (long way to go) and makes the roster, its very possible that Trae Waynes won't be resigned by the Vikings. Long way to go yet obviously and its far from a guarantee, but its an obvious path if those things fall into line. Minnesota has several talented young players they need to sign.

Have you seen Hughes? The kid is built.

I was pissed as hell we drafted a DB @ 30 this past draft given other needs on the team. But this kid might be a real diamond and you can never have enough good DB's.

And to another posters point, remember when just getting off the field on 3rd down was a win? Now I'm starting to take for granted the #1 D in the league.

Shame, shame, shame on me...

If  highs  is the  Dimond and hill a  ruby so to say  then losing Waynes  would  be doable  even though I feel he is a rising star  but dam corners  even average ones make bank in free agency  so maybe  losing a rising young cb but drafting his replacement allows  the Vikings to keep Diggs or hunter so be it

Hughes will be mainly used as the nickel corner with Rhodes and Waynes on the outsides.  Basically the secondary needs all 3 to cover other teams top wide receivers.

I was with you. Kinda said to myself...that's a Zimmer pick. If he is the best player available(on their board)at that point. Then take him and be happy you got him. I really hope he plays this year and plays well.

we keep saying we cant resign them all... well the best way to stay competitive while losing start players to free agency is to draft more studs.  Sounds like they are planning for life without Waynes or possibly... (gulp) Rhodes?   Letting Waynes walk turns a first rounder into a 3rd round compensatory pick... trading Rhodes at the height of his game under a decent contract may net an early second or even a late first rounder.  I think  a lot depends on how the rest of the corners round out this year,  I dont see Zim running without 2 studs and 2 quality back ups.

That's how I felt at the time. I of course wanted a mammoth lineman or something, but I still shiver when I think of our secondary from the 20 years previous. 99? 2000? Wasswa Serwanga and Robert Tate? Never again.
