“This guy has the traits we’re looking for. We have an understanding of exactly what we’re looking for. I do think the punt return and the kick return did play a big part of it. We weren’t as explosive in our return game as we wanted to be last year. This kid will help us in all phases of special teams, and we’re going to mature him into being a full-time player. I don’t know how soon that will be, but he’s got the traits we’re looking for.”
“We spent a lot of time with a lot of people that had him in their football programs,” General Manager Rick Spielman said. “We spent a lot of time with people outside of football programs. After our extensive research, no question, we felt very confident with him coming in and being a Minnesota Viking.”
The 5-10 Hughes can play as an outside corner or in the slot, Zimmer said, though the coach said Hughes wasn’t drafted to push third-year corner Mackensie Alexander. Zimmer said there’s still a chance 39-year-old Terence Newman could return in 2018, and the team’s depth at cornerback could enable the coach to use nickel packages with four corners and one safety.

i wonder if this type of player could have been had in the 4-5 round? hope he is more than a marcus sherels replacement.

A sherels replacement in year 1, with the notion that he will become a lockdown corner. Waynes took a few years but is a crucial piece now.
LA just traded a bunch for 2 CBs. They are so important in defending the high powered offenses of today's NFL. Remember what happened when we had to rely on our depth against the eagles.
Do we value size and speed?
gotta be honest, This feels a lot like the Treadwell pick. WRs going.....grab one...
CBs going....grab one

Mike Hughes was graded very highly by multiple sites.
Josh Jackson, Isaiah Oliver, Carlton Davis, Donte Jackson, MJ Stewart, and Holton Hill to name a few were still available.
I was surprised they did not take Jackson but maybe the 3-cone time and return ability of Hughes is what gave him more value?
Regardless of when they took a corner, they had to get one and I would not be surprised if they took another.
They only have 3 right now. If any would have been hurt then you would be looking at bringing in Sherels who is not good at all as a corner.
I think the pick was very good although they do need to get an offensive lineman tonight.

In hindsight, as much as I wanted Hernandez for his sheer nastiness, the Vikes must like their OL starters and see value in later rounds. I also agree DB depth is a definite need and they are not done at that position. Today and tomorrow will tell if that is correct...

I remember Newman struggling when pressed into service outside. Rhodes was ailing but really couldn't come off the field. Brock and Sherels weren't good enough and Newman has defied age for a long time, but is reaching the end.
It may not be what the fans saw as a need, but it is kinda funny watching amateurs losing their shit over this.
The guys they wanted for O-line went ahead of their pick. They just didn't have the ammo to go up and get them without taking themselves out of other spots of need for the rest of the draft. So, they stayed at 30 and picked the highest player left on their board at a position that needed more depth. It all makes plenty of sense and I'm inclined to believe they know who fits their team better than we do.

I don't believe it - Spielman has never targeted offensive linemen early. Seeing Price and Ragnow drafted was likely a huge relief for them so they did not have to explain why Hughes was picked over them (especially Ragnow the local guy). What about James Daniels, who is rated as an ideal lineman for zone blocking, if not Will Hernandez or Connor Williams?
If they were sad about any player being drafted early, it was Jaire Alexander. Zimmer wants early-round CBs on his team, as many as he can get. You would think the past few years would make him lie awake worrying about his QB getting hurt, but apparently his nightmares are all about running out of CBs.
