Will Minnesota Trade Out Of The First Round
#1

With Spielman as their general manager, Minnesota has never traded out of the draft’s first round. However, 2018 could be a different story for the Vikings.

I think there's a very good chance the Vikings trade down. Obviously, it depends on who's available when we're on the clock. I could see us adding another pass rusher to our rotation, but to me there are two players that we may not be able to pass on and may not want to risk being swiped ahead of us if we do trade down. And that's Isaiah Wynn and Will Hernandez. Both seem to be the kind of guards who can start right away in our scheme. Wynn could be the next Randall McDaniel. A perfect fit for a team who will run a lot of outside zone runs with Dalvin Cook.

I'd prefer a tackle here, but the more I look at the tackles the less I like. I think Connor Williams is the best, but he might be a better fit at guard. Same with Tyrell Crosby. McGlinchey might be there. He's overrated as a top 10 pick but maybe not so much at 30. I think Orlando Brown is being severely underrated by his poor combine numbers. But is he a fit for what we want to do? He could be a trade down target if the buzz about him dropping to the 2nd day is true. Just not sure it is.

Really like some of the day-two interior guys like Ragnow and Corbett, perhaps opening that 1st pick to a pass rusher or a corner. Two weeks from today we'll know....

It ultimately will come down to pick interest and if either Mason Rudolph/Lamar Jackson or good RB's are left on the board. A team sitting in the 2nd who wants the 5th year option on a QB or wants to jump the numerous RB hungry teams at the top of the 2nd for their primary choice will pay market value. Outside of those situations they may end up getting stuck at 30 unless they are willing to trade out for pennies on the dollar. Spielman has refused to do that time and time again.

As of today my best guess is that they'd be willing to move down but won't be able to.

Wynn or Daniels are the only interior lineman I'd consider at 30 for MN. Otherwise there is more value waiting for Ragnow/Corbett in the 2nd or early 3rd. Any of the OT's make sense though since the talent drops off extremely fast.

Personally I wouldn't be completely against it. Sources say he isn't very high on the Vikings board.

That's interesting. Probably has to do with their analytics (short arms and small hands). Personally, I don't think you could design a guard for the Vikings any better than Wynn. But my goodness Hernandez is one impressive dude.

So if Wynn and Daniels are gone are you looking to move down or is there a CB, DL or OLB that you could see us grabbing at 30 and waiting for Ragnow/Corbett?

Guru, just saw this on one of your top prospects for us at 30:

30. Minnesota Vikings: Isaiah Oliver, CB, Colorado

Few things are more important in the NFL today than quality defensive backs to counteract the pass, making it a premium position NFL teams won't hesitate to start runs on during the draft.
This 2018 class has been interesting, though, because Colorado cornerback Isaiah Oliver has had a hard time creating some elbow room in the form of national attention. It's odd, as he's a high-upside bump-and-run corner who came up big as a tackler during his time in college.
In fact, the NFL values key athletic traits in cornerbacks, making the lack of hype for Oliver almost feel like a sort of smokescreen by omission because teams don't want to show their hand via interest.
He's 6'1" and 190 pounds with a 40-yard dash of 4.5 seconds at the combine and has one other critical measurement going for him, according to Bleacher Report's Marcus Mosher:
Quote:
I believe #Colorado CB Isaiah Oliver has the longest wingspan (80 5/8") for any CB since 2015. Impressive.
In the mock above, a defensive mind like Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer won't pass on such a moldable player at a premium position.
Yes, the Vikings have already invested notable assets in the position and have guys like Trae Waynes and Xavier Rhodes, but as hinted, teams won't shy away from adding more and more. Keep in mind Zimmer also helped draft in Cincinnati before coming to Minnesota, where the team didn't hesitate to take a first-round cornerback often.

Just thinking out loud but the draft is in a few weeks and say we go Oliver at 30.  Then in early May we need to think about the 5th year option for Waynes.  Does drafting Oliver affect that?   Waynes 5th year option will probably be over 9 million for the option year and we could use that money to resign Barr, Kendricks, Hunter and maybe even Richardson if he goes beast mode.

Size wise Oliver looks a lot like Xavier with long arms.

Guru, I am coming along into you projected Oliver camp at 30th and then a OL/G with our second rounder.
