SI.com's Breer: Why the Vikings are betting big on JJ McCarthy
#1
Really good article, long and in-depth. And yeah, by the end of training camp, the only thing that separated Uncle Sammy and JJ 'was experience'. This is The One.

'O'Connell on working with quarterbacks in Minnesota: “We’ve kind of built things to be quarterback friendly, but yet the quarterback has to have ownership of those things.”

Everything is at stake with the kid...
The stakes are even higher cause that QB room is full of echo's in April. They tried and couldn't keep Darnold or Jones.
I'm sensing more steam re: the Vikings eventually making a trade for a back-up
Thats a 14/3 team with veterans expecting to compete in the post-season for a SB
My hope right now is JJM has a strong spring and can show the knee is solid.
Its my Viking PTSD rearing itself - again

At that point, as they lined Darnold and McCarthy up against each other, in O’Connell’s words, “the difference was just Sam’s experience.”

That really says it all right there.

Good article that pretty much confirms everything we kinda/sorta knew.

You never really know if a young QB can play in the NFL until he takes snaps in a real NFL game, but I think we can probably safely say he's no Josh Rosen or Trey Lance, and just THAT is a very good thing. That throw to Trishton Jackson on the over route with a LB in his face was a throw not many rookie QBs make. Hell, not many veteran QBs for that matter.

I was thinking at the time but didn't want to say it out loud for fear of raising the ire of the Ma McCarthys—ok, you :-)—but I wondered if the weight loss was maybe due to depression. I mean that injury had to be a crushing blow to young JJ. He's spoken very openly about the depression he went through in high school, using meditation to get through it. Now, put your gasket back on your cylinder, Stick. It's just a thought. I know when Teddy went down, the team was rightly just as concerned with his mental wellbeing as his physical one.

In either case, he's clearly past it; he's putting the weight back on and he's on track to helm what should be a very good offense. Long-suffering Viking fans have a LOT to be excited about.

lol, no worries man. JJ has been open about how he felt when his best friend died unexpectedly and the depression it put him in. And no doubt the injury was a surprise setback. Its an honest and fair thought. COVID, being forced to play his high school year away from home at IMG in Florida because his high school shut down the program his senior year and then his friend's death had him depressed. But this is what makes him who he is, tried by fire to bring the traits of resilience, high character and strength of beliefs.

The pass you and KOC mentions in the article where he stands in there, gets blasted and throws a beautiful ball to Jackson was really something. If you watch the catch, its like Jackson put his arms up and someone places the ball perfectly in his hands. Perfect throw.

We’ve seen a lot of these articles. It kind of feels like a publicity campaign the Vikings have been putting out. Regardless, it doesn’t really matter. Either he’ll be good or not.

My purple hope is the "Team" will be so good enough to carry JJ. Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, Russel Wilson all won Superbowl's in there first couple years while the team did most the heavy lifting. Looks like the Vikings will have strong running game, much improved Oline, a really good defense and a great kicker. JJ just needs to take what the D gives him and eliminate the big mistakes. (easier said then done)
